This is my Favorite Forum but lately there haven't been any new thread's. Has every one but me quiet collecting nickels?
Yes, it's one of my favorites too. Jefferson nickels are the only coins I collect as a series. I've collected them since I was a child, and still enjoy the hobby. :smile
still here Somehow, I got sent to another place when I hit Variety on my favorites. Anyway, I'm still here. Frank collecting Jefferson coins, tokens and medals
I agree with what Glaciermi. I wish this would be moved up to the main coin section! I normally post any nickel related discussions in the US coin section anyway.
Possibly the reason is there just aren't to many people that collect Nickels. If they do it's usually only to add to a coin collection, not because they like the things. As for me I think the Shield Nickels are to short lived, the Liberty Heads to plain, Buffalo Nickels are OK but there is nothing you could do to a Jefferson Nickel except start all over. I'm sorry but I just don't like Nickels.
Jefferson Collectors I'm glad to find some Jefferson Collectors here. I'm completing a BU & proof set 1938/2006 right now. Also, is anyone going through the bison coins for errors? I have found some really interesting stuff from my 1000-coin bags and rolls. I would love to hear from anyone else who wants to start a thread on this. A-
Since this is a semi official nickel thread I've got a quick question. I've got a '38-'06 set and a couple of the 80's proofs have a kind of cloudy/milky look to the surface. Is this something that happens a lot? What causes it? Right now the nickels are all in a Dansco album, but I will be moving them all to Airtite's to keep them nice. Thanks
It's known as haze and no it's not uncommon. It can be caused by a few different things. First is PVC, if the coin was kept in a PVC flip for a period of time then that haze may be the result. Second is normal oxidation - toning. Third is a residue left on the planchets when the mint washed them. The bad part is - whatever caused it - once it's there it will generally only increase with time. And the only way to get rid of it is to dip the coin.
Thanks for your help as always. I'll probably just pick up a couple to replace these ones & hope the same thing doesn't happen. It's only a couple of dates & they seem to be selling cheap enough.
