First off I'd like to tell You that I have been collecting for about a year now and concentrate mostly on silver.....That being said heres my question!

Why do people put such a high price on the 1996 and 1995 American silver eagles.....Is there something im missing?....I have picked plenty of them up for $10.95 or a few bucks more:hail:. (To my benefit the local coin shop pays no attention to the market)

So whats the outrageous price for?.....No these are not proof coins im looking at...Regular plain jane Eagles.

The last place I saw a 95 they were asking 164 bucks for it....(the place was overpriced anyway but that coin was obsurdly overpriced...I've notice the same thing at goldeneaglecoins.com except its the 96 coin..)

    Im cluless.

    Thanks
    Jacob

It's the market forces at work, supply and demand. If you have a source that sells the coins significantly below market price, perhaps there's an opportunity for you there to fund your collection of more interesting coins. I wonder, though, if you may be comparing apples to oranges, so to speak. That 95 going for $164 wouldn't have happened to be a proof, would it? Certainly nobody should be paying that much for a regular ol 1995 Silver American Eagle.

Welcome here. Now just where are you looking for prices of coins. The silver Eagles are not expensive at all anywhere. 1995 is about $12 to $15 in Unc. However, you may be talking about the rare ones with a real, live Eagle on them. Also, the lady on the obverse is a real, live minature person that will walk off the coin if not watched. :smile :smile
You said you are collecting silver coins. Just exactly which ones are you collecting? What types, conditions, denominations, etc.? Where do you go for them? Have you tried coin shows? Do you go to coin shops?
    Need more info here.

    Eagle

The price of the 96 is higher because that year was the lowest mintage of the series at 3,603,368 coins. Most years are over 5 million on up to 11 million coins.

The price guide I looked at had them from $50 for ms65 up to $100 for ms69.

Welcome to the forum. If you can get 1996 silver eagles for under $15, you could make a nice profit.

I need to start shopping where you do. 96 ASE's for that price is a steal.

Even my 2004 Redbook puts them at $26 each in UNC condition (first Redbook I grabbed).

    Welcome to the forum :)

Do a thread search here, or a goodle search on 1995 W Silver Eagle and you will see where some of the hype comes from. There were only 30000+ proofs minted with the W mintmark in 1995 so domand is pretty high (sells for $4500 +) This alone is enough to increase the value of any 1995 silver eagle in some folks mind....so the market price goes up.

There are many places on-line where you can buy the '95 ASE for anywhere from $15 - $18. Here's one - CLICK HERE Here's Another

The '96 is a bit pricey if you buy them on-line - $40 - $50 at many shops. But I still see them in brick & mortar shops for around $25 - $30.

Well, that's just one of the issues with a community like this. We don't know how experienced a new member is, until we get to know them. I'm sure nobody meant any offense, we're just trying to be helpful. I hope you'll stay around long enough for us to get to know you.
