I am currently looking for a 1923-S Monroe commemorative half in MS64, graded by PCGS or NGC. I went to a shop this week and saw a nice one. They asked for $350. I thought the price was outrageous - the latest grey sheet showed bid and ask prices of $190 and $205 respectively. The dude, who was a newbie, did not care and said that was the price. Since there were many folks exchanging and buying gold and silver with money flow way beyond mine, I decided to bag any discussion and left.

So last night, I went on eBay just to see what the prices were for the certified commem. To my surprise, the "buy it now" prices ranged from $250 to $440. Knowing this coin has dropped a lot in price in the past year, I wonder if the sellers of this coin are trying to avoid a loss in what they purchased it for. Any thoughts?

Most likely. Be patient and you'll find the coin you want at the price you want ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I was just shocked by the price and the delta from the Grey Sheet. There are a lot of these out there, so I'll be patient.

I paid $250 for an NGC ms-64 back in March (local show). I probably paid a tad too much but I did like the coin. If you look on Heritage (past auctions) the prices for these are all over the place with recent auctions realizing anywhere between $150 & $347. Most tended toward the lower 200's though. Be patient like Doug says. You'll find your coin at a price you like.....:)

He sounds like a dealer who comes to the regular coin show here where I live and specializes mostly in proof sets in OGP. His price for a 2008 clad set is almost twice the going rate and what can be found on eBay.

With a little shopping around, I actually purchased one for $15 under grey sheet.

    It pays to be patient.

I am sure I will find a nice one at the ANA show in a couple of weeks.
