Skunky Day - 2 boxes of Dimes. Nothing.

I did nickels too ($40 worth). I'm not sure if I have the patience for them. I found a 1941 (which is not a War Nickel), a 1949, 5 in the 1950's, and a ton of 1960's. In face there is enough 1964's to make a roll I think. The Red Book has the 1960's at $.25 each. Does anyone else keep anything for collection value as opposed to Silver? I know it's been discussed, but I'm forgetting.

What nickels are worth holding on to? Feedback appreciated...thanks in advance.

Ace, I hold everything earlier than '60. I keep "bar" '60's, got about 10-15 now.

No real point to it, though, I suppose I'm just hoarding 'em to check for OMM's and whatnot on a rainy day. You should know to disregard redbook prices by now.

Oh, I also keep any BU's from before '70, and Any FS coins from before '88 if they look nice. Obviously, just about any older nickel that's BU and FS is worth keeping.

This reminds me, I received a money clip as gift long ago. It had a Walker in it, reverse showing, so I thought that was neat. More recently, I decided to pop it out and glue in a clad Kennedy, save that Walker. So I popped it out, and the thing was sliced in half! I only had the reverse, it's half the size and flat on the other side.
I suppose it makes sense, why make one money clip with a Walker when you can make two.

Merc - Thanks for the feedback. I didn't put a lot of stock in the Redbook. I just thought it was weird cause it had the 1960's at a quarter in value. I already chucked them back. I think I'll hold the 59 and earliers for now. I may do nickels here and there as I'd be happy to find a war, buffalo, or V. However, they just don't seem to offer that much return on the time in my eyes. Maybe I'm just a bit ignorant on some of the value.

I do nickels more for fun than profit, so that's cool if you don't get into nickels, leave me more fun. :p

In the last two days I went through a box of dimes+ $200 in bank rolled dimes, and a box of nickels. I found a 1941 merc, a 1947 rosie(very beat up though), 1942 and 43 war nickels and a 1965 proof nickel. Plus a ton of pre-64 clad nickels. All in all not to bad. Anyone know what a proof nickel goes for?

Well it is not a proof, no proofs were struck during 1965, it probably came from a SMS set and is PL. Probably worth .50c to a $1

From yesterday those two boxes of dimes I picked up only produced that 1 x Roosie I reported
The second box I picked up was from a bank that was running hot on dimes and always produced and now a skunker

I must have $700 in clad dimes to dump over the weekend and start again

The head teller at the local bank with the new coin counting machine made a comment the other day about me "loving" the new coin machine. I said "yeah it saves me a ton of time". I asked if she minded if I use it (3 times so far in 2 weeks) and she said "no it's alot better than taking rolled coin". I don't plan to use it so much where I wear out my welcome because it's in my home town and I don't want to ruin this new good thing.

For some reason I don't feel nearly as bad dumping large amounts of coin on TD bank. They never give me a problem and are always super nice. If I can carry my daughter and the $700 in dimes into the bank I'm dumping them all there. I haven't been there in about 3 weeks so they are due for a visit!

after reading a few pages, i feel as though i'm the enemy in this thread. i work in a bank, and my loose schedule allows me a bunch of time to roll coin. a few months ago, i started glancing through what i was rolling for silvers and other oddities. since then, i've come up with 4 90% halves, 6 40% halves, 8 silver quarters, about 30 silver dimes, 4 wartime nickels, and around 2500 wheaties. i've also found several silver canadian pieces and a bunch of other old foreign currency.

so far today, i've rolled $500 in quarters (no luck) and have another $1000 to do, plus $100 nickels and $300 in pennies. i doubt i'll get to all of it, but if i find anything i'll post a pic.

    ^ Lucky you!

Today I had my bank tell me that they can no longer accept my coins. I'm a CUSTOMER of their bank, through a checking account for over 4 years. They were so unbelievably rude to me. The teller didn't speak to me once while he was counting my coins - didn't even say hello. The only reason I take my coins to them and use them as my dump bank is because they told me they didn't have enough coins to sell to me to search through in the first place.
I'm going to be pulling my money out of there asap, and starting on with Wells Fargo. They've been nothing but nice to me - all the tellers know me by name now. Amazing what good customer service can do for a company.

You should ask to speak with a manager. Have them show you the policy about providing and accepting coin for CUSTOMERS. They most likely won't be able to produce it and if they do it most likely will say that they have to accept your rolled or loose coins. Banks are different on the policies but if you are a customer and you want to deposit coins I'm pretty sure they have to take them. Merc maybe able to elaborate on this a bit.

Talk to a manager. How much are you dumping there per week? Did you just get a cranky teller?

    Ordered 1st Box of Halves

I have visited all banks in my area and have cleaned them out of halves, so now I'm getting a couple dollars here and there from what customers are turning in and it's not producing much if anything. On my lunch break I was able to roll up 12 rolls of dimes quick so I could turn them into cash at a local bank I visit every week or two. The head teller happened to be the only one there, seemed like a nice guy and I ask him if he can order me some half dollars. He checks his sheet (Dunbar was listed on the top) and tells me he will order them but it will be $500 and I have to take them all at one time. No problem I tell him, order them for me please. Gave him my name and number and should have them Monday. Traded in my dimes and walked out with my $60 and a box of halves on the way.

You did not really say but are you a teller? I guess it would suck if you worked at the banks I visit because it sounds like I would not be getting any loose silver for sure. BWR are the way to go. All the banks around me that take loose coin send it off to be counted then deposited. Then if you bring in rolled coin it stays rolled in their vaults. Are you saying you get loose coin into the bank and they let you sit there and roll it...wow.

Suntrust bank. Only one of the branches was mean to me - really all of the employees there hate me - don't even say hello. I dump there maybe once every other day - about $150-$200... They said they are contracted with brinks to accept a certain amount of coin and with my coin, they have "too much". I was angry about this because they had told me in the first place they were running out of coins to provide me - so I figured I'd try to help them out. Guess not.

The manager was the one who talked to me. I'll be calling Suntrust corporate later on today. Very upsetting :(

You're in CT - Dunbar is the only coin company that services banks. They service every bank in the state of CT, except for 1, which is serviced by Brinks. Don't ask me how I know - tons of research and communications with both companies. Brinks handles coinstars and other things of that nature. Dunbar has contracts with almost every bank in CT as well that doesn't allow them to sell bags out of their machines. Anyone searching and dumping halves in CT is dumping where they eat - but what can you do.

i'm actually the assistant IT director, which means i do a little bit of everything until the IT director needs someone to fill her shoes. it leaves me a lot of time to roll coin.

the coin that customers bring into our bank is counted and sorted in-house, and then we roll it back up and sell it back to customers as they need it. every so often, we order extra coin from our correspondent bank, which we will then recount and roll up before stocking it for customers. so basically, every coin that enters the bank in any way eventually gets rolled, usually by me.

    just one of the perks!
