Hi. I am new to this hobby and would like some help. I got this coin today and was wondering what it might grade at. I don't want to say what I paid yet, because I will be embarrassed if I over paid. I like the design and it looked good so I got it.

Thanks for looking and your help.

First off, welcome to the forum!

It looks to have AU details, but it's been harshly cleaned, so that knocks off a lot of the value. Don't be embarrassed, just learn from it. I agree it is a beautiful design and you wil learn to detect cleaning as you gain experience in the hobby. The "hairlines" or fine scratches on the obverse, or "heads" side are a tell-tale sign of a bad cleaning.

Sorry if I came off like I thought you were stupid. I just am putting it very plainly because I can't be sure how knowledgeable you are without seeing other posts.

thank you for your honest. I was afraid it had been cleaned because I couldn't get cart wheel effect. I hope that is what it is called. I have been told that if you don't see that effect, then it probably has been cleaned. Is this true? anyways... I paid $38.00 for it

Plus you don't even have to say what you gave for it it's up to you but welcome to the site.
The thing that would cause me not to want it would be the marks across the face - always pay attention to "prime focal points" and see my post on problem coins from last week.
    Keep learning,

    $38 sounds okay to me...
And it is cleaned yes, but AU-MS details, and a very nice coin...
Those marks across the face are pretty bad, but still a nice coin...
PCGS might put it in a Genuine slab, and ANACS would probably grade AU Details, Cleaned.

thank you for your replies. I do like the coin, but next time I will look closer for the little scratches on it. I didn't notice them until I looked at these pics.. maybe I need to carry one of the jeweler magnifying things with me.

Ken welcome to CoinTalk, can I sugest that you pick up a copy of the Red book, this will give you a great deal of info on the coins and you can get it pocket size as well LOL, you do need to get a loup I never go out without mine :D
So you might have paid a bit over the top for a coin, not a biggy LOL I defy any member to say they have never done the same  I still do it every now and then when I see something that I realy want and have been after for a long time LOL
Now as for the coin yep it has been cleaned but it is still a rather nice coin :D there are collectors here who will not touch a cleaned coin, Me I am not one of them LOL (as long as it is not polished out) Main thing is to have fun with the hobby :thumb:

AU with details...stating improperly cleaned!! Always look closely for cleaning it will decrease the value every time. Still it's a nice coin. I agree with the rest of the post, get a loop and as always buying on ebay is a little risky!!

nice coin, but I'm thinking that the cleaning will bump it down into VF-XF category for pricing. Otherwise, very nice details.
