Never heard of "about XF" I give it an EF-30 http://cgi.ebay.com/1835-Bust-Quarter-Abt-XF-Attractive-/160568799204?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2562a56fe4
He's stretching it. You know, like when the first basemen has to make an incredable stretch on a lousy throw by the shortstop?
About XF isn't all that unusual a descriptive grade, particularly for world coins. In theory, it might correspond to a VF35 or VF38 grade, but in this case IMO it's closer to VF25 or VF30 details with environmental damage.
About and Good are commonly used modifiers for ancients. The continuum would be Fine, good Fine, About VF, VF, good VF, about XF, etc. I am not saying I agree with his grade, just that these are common terminologies.
I've not yet dove in to even try to grade any of my world coins yet. Learn something new everyday @ CT. Thanks for the info, not sure I would justify buying anything raw in that price range that I'm not 75% sure would grade out higher than the sellers ask.
You would be well advised to ignore any and all grading opinions provided by a seller -- and rather focus on the price, pictures and return policy. This auction is yet another reason for offering such advice. With respect...Mike
+1 with the caveat of if you know and respect the seller, and even then judge it for yourself. There are a handful of copper guys that sell online where I trust their judgment, but they also tend to take really nice photos
