Bought This SEGS Slabbed Nickel on eBay. Think it Will Cross at PCGS?

I bought this SEGS slabbed 1954 S FS Nickel on eBay. For $185.00. Is there any possibility it will actually receive the FS designation at PCGS? I read SEGS does grade fairly accurate, but I don't know about their FS designation. I bought it to send to PCGS for crossover.

    MS64 1954 S FS in PCGS Slab trend $2500 +

    Thanks for any help.

As a general rule... if the coin is not in a top tier holder there is a reason for it. I would bet that it does not come back FS.

I'd have to run from a holder that says "NICE FOR A 54S".

Haha I just noticed that. I love the bar code on the back. I would love to scan that beauty to check for authenticity!

Yeah, true, but look at that Seller's feedback....23,600 +..100% Pos!

If I don't think it stands a chance of crossing over..I'll have to send it back for refund.

I think sending it back for a refund would be the best bet. You purchased a $2,000 coin for under $200. That is just way to good to be true. Better luck next time!

I am a Jefferson Nickel fanatic. I can say, with no uncertainty, that this nickel is FAR from full steps. Sorry :(
In fact, it barely even has one full step. Here is your nickels' steps sharpened up and zoomed in. I hate being the bearer of bad news, but this nickel is worth under a dollar.

Thanks for the sharper images. Looks like it will be going back to seller.

Lol, true! It also probably has full steps all the way across. Well, underneath the smooshed parts.

The auction reads 1954-s BU Full Steps.

    Maybe should read 1954-s BS.......:)

0.38% chance it goes FS at PCGS.

I hope you prove me wrong! :)

    SEGS is a 'basement' grader.
Much of their stuff I have seen, IMO, looks like it was pulled from a front jeans pocket and placed in an MS-70 labeled slab.

    Edit:
Also, as a general rule, I steer clear of dealers that give credibility to basement graders by selling coins in those slabs.
I can understand they would get some in inventory now and again, but to leave them in a 'fictional' slab is wrong.
The dealer surely came into the slab by explaining to the seller how flawed basement slabbed coins are, so why
would he turn around and foist it back on his customers unless he didn't think much of his customers. My opinion.

I knew from the first glance that this isn't a full steps nickel, and I'm no expert or collector of these. I would send it back when you receive it, it's not even worth the amount you paid for it. Like mentioned above, there is a reason that this coin isn't in a Top TPG slab, and I wouldn't doubt that this coin has been submitted to PCGS or NGC before, and came back as a none-full steps and even a lower grade. Obviously, this guy got lucky that SEGS even gave it a FS, now I know they aren't the best, but how could you miss the mushy and otherwise smooth part on the middle of the 2nd to last steps? That's one question that I'll never know.

It sounds as if you are referring to SGS (Star Grading Service) and not SEGS ( http://www.segsgrading.com/ ) which has Larry Briggs, Jeff Oxman and Bill Fivaz (CPG Co-author) as its consultants. SEGS also offer a fair market value guarantee for coins they grade with their Grade Guarantee ( http://www.segsgrading.com/guarantee.html ).

Looking at the slab in the listing, it specifically states "5-Steps/Bridges/Ticks" then "Nice for 54-S" which more than likely means that their are 5 Steps showing but with bridges and ticks which would not warrant a "Full Step" designation at another TPG. The slab does not state "FULL STEPS" nor does it state "FS". That designation is the eBay sellers opinion.

SEGS is not a "basement" grading company. We have paid for a store front for almost 15 years. The person that posted this coin either mis-titled this coin or did it by mistake. Very often the dealer or seller has someone else post items to ebay for them for an hourly rate of pay. You should always check each item carefully before purchasing. The slab clearly states the step count... it is not a "Full Step" nickle. You have to see several thousand nickels to confidently place words like "Nice for a 54-S" on a label. Most knowledgeable numismatists know some coins can be mushy, exhibit die wear, or are simply poorly stuck depending on the year and type of coin. The way the header reads for this listing you should have no problem getting a refund.

SEGS did not call the coin a FS coin. They said it had five steps, which it does on the left hand side, with nicks and bridges. So from that they are clearly saying it is NOT a FS coin. As for the comment "Nice for a 54-S" it is. The 54-S tends to come very bad and most of them don't have steps anywhere close to being as well struck as the coin in the auction. SEGS is a good company and they are better at varieties and attributions than the top two companies.

Boy, I just can't see that lower right corner of the steps. Looks kinda soft there.

Now that I look at the slab label, I can hardly believe it! Who are these guys? They put an opinion on the slab? I've never seen that before.

The label is accurate. It is nice for a 54-S. But they are admitting that it's not truly FS by also typing in "bridges and nick".

It may be worth what you paid because it is an above average 54-S. But it won't cross to PCGS.

Sorry to tell you. Lesson learned.
