A suggestion in regards to new users on CT...

It would have almost no effect as a new rule. Very few even have read the existing rules, and many violate them every day ( both new members as well as old members). It would make it much easier on all ( especially mods) if:

Each new thread was only started ONCE! ( Mods have had to attack up to 4 or 5 threads, trying to merge or produce some order almost every day.

Use only one ID, Some think we don't know, but we do. Some use more than one to pat themselves on the back, give the other ID a like, etc. Really makes me wonder.

Title the thread informatively, So many thread say nothing about the "real " subject. Too many "AMAZING FIND", "My Saturday", " What is it worth?" When it could be titled " Nice find of a 1922 plain Lincoln", Saturday at the Carson City mint, How much is my 1921 Peace dollar worth?

A better title will get interested, knowledgeable people to read and answer.

Language and Respect of others. Read the rules if you don't know what is expected. It is well explained and if all followed them ( even if some think they are not modern acceptability ) We would have fewer flamings. Not every one is as smart, personable, and handsome/cute as you, so cut them a lot of slack.

Thank you, that's the best idea I've heard all night! :D There were many other great points that I agree with and suggestions I was about to give, but I think its all been covered. The general consensus seems to be to leave a good thing alone and get back to what we love-and why we are all here to begin with. The type of members the OP was referring to don't seem to last for more than a few posts from what I've seen anyway. Either they pick up on their posting skills or exit after a couple threads. Now on to my next dumb question...LOL

It's more about letting someone get acclimated to the climate and type of culture that exists on the forum more-so than gagging them. Perhaps make it two threads in the first 50, then. One to introduce, and one that goes over the details of whatever they happen to be interested in. It's not about limiting expression or the spread of ideas, or even being elitist, it's about preserving the culture of the forum and getting the newbies to understand that CT isn't just a resource, it's a community.

Desert, you really aren't using all of the vbulletin tools available to you if you don't understand how easy it is to simply install a minor mod that allows you to prevent new users from posting more than x amount of threads until any particular condition is reached. On other forums I've moderated in the past, such policies were in place, and they ended up working out great for the forum.

I think, given the size of CT, anyway, there should probably be at least one or two more very active moderators anyway, the forum is a bit undermoderated, imho.

LOL sorry but I do not believe in limiting the number of posts ok some are repetative others can be annoying but for the poster it can be a new and exciting world that they have just discoverd :D
The thing is you do not have to read them nor do you have to respond to them, can you imagine how YOU would feel if after making a intro post you made a second then found a "REAL INTERESTING COIN" that you know nothing about but were not allowed to ask for another 3 weeks!!! you would just give up and move on (I know I would)

It is up to the owner and the Administrator to set the policy and rules, as a moderator, I just try to use them to make the forum a better place for all.

Well, now that i've thought about it, I'd like to withdraw my previous statement regarding my views on ths idea... After I read some of the responses, I began to think about my first week here, and how ignorantly I posted. it was a learning experience, not only was I new here, I was completely new to Internet forums. I fumbled around like a new-born giraffe, but eventually I got the hang of it. I think everyone needs some time to learn the ropes, and eventually will become a decent poster. It may not happen overnight, after all Rome was'nt built in a day. I think we must give new comers a hance.

I apologize for my original post, it was written in the heat of the moment... Selfishly I was annoyed with a newbie who was posting newbie posts... Afterall that's what they do, that's what we all did. I am going to say who, and I would like to apologize to them personally.

rickyh211, I would like to apologize for the hostility I have portrayed towards new posters... I hope I have not discouraged you from posting in anyway. I would also like to assure you, that is not my normal behavior, and would like to be your friend.

    Thank you all for listening.

One more thing, I would like to say.... I think CoinTalk is perfect the way it is and is in no need of change, in any way, shape, or form. I very much enjoy my time spent here, I learn something everyday, and I try to help someone else do the same. Afterall we are here to celebrate this wonderful hobby called Numismatics, and try to encourage others to join us.

I think Peter does a brilliant job as well as all the mods, and I thank them for their service....Afterall CoinTalk would not be the same without them... When I think about my future at CoinTalk, I think about being important to the community, and teaching others.... I think about being a moderator and doing my service to Fellow Cointalkers... I think about the knowledge that has yet to be shared with myself, and I look forward to reading it. My ultimate goal is to be the best Collector and CoinTalker I can be... And you all inspire me to do that....

Once again, thanks for listening :)

Thank you zach24 for your openness and direct honesty-you saw the issue from both sides of the fence and realized that there are some gray areas here, but that you were once in the same shoes and admitted it. It seems to me that this is the perfect place to end this discussion...UNLESS we want to bring up a modification to the welcome email to be sure the new guys read it before jumping in? Ok...I will show myself to the door for the evening lol before I keep it going ha ha ha... CT is perfect the way it is!

But if the noobs like me weren't allowed to ask our stupid questions, how would we ever learn the difference? Experience and questions are what make a seasoned anything.

I love the give and take of CT and don't see any reason to limit new members in any way. To the contrary, some of my favorite threads are from members just coming onboard who sometimes have a new perspective on our great hobby. Young or old, experienced or not, they all have something important to share and should be heard. If you have no particular interest in what they have to say, then you need not comment. One of the purposes of CT is to promote and expand our hobby base, and by limiting the new and curious we're doing it, and ourselves a great disservice.

HOTN, you're one of the most active on that thread, and I love reading your posts. Definitely didn't mean you.

Regardless, forget my statement. After reading through these posts, forget it. Newbies need help, I guess we should just get through their goofy posts and maybe hope that they'll become active members, rather than just posting one "I found a weird quarter, whats it worth?" thread and leaving the forum. Keep things as they are.

I went looking for a good coin forum back in April. After reviewing several I signed up on Coin Talk. Why? I read some post and I read the rules and came away thinking that this was a good forum for me. I was right and I am on here everyday. This forum is educational, has great folks on it, entertaining, and easy to use.
I believe that all new people are going to be active at start and then settle in along the way.
I am a new member and try to be moderate in my posting. It is in our genes as coin collectors to want to show off what we know and what we have. This is not a bad thing.

Ok, I am not a mod or admin, but I see no point in setting a limit on how much new members can post. When I joined, I got on here and started posting just like I do now, and I never had any trouble. If new members aren't allowed to post as much, they won't be learning as much. And this forum is an excellent place to learn about coins and paper money. Like mentioned above, it's easy to use, it's fun to learn, there's good people on here that are willing to help, and it's a downright good forum with no bad language or harsh language in anyway.

I don't mind the questions newbies ask, it's all part of the learning curve. When I started collecting I didn't know what was rare or what was common. After a couple of months of reading threads from others you pick up a lot of information. There's no need to put the reins on newbies.

However...... what does bother me is when newbies use text messaging shortcuts which makes it frustrating to read their posts. I will rarely answer a post that I have to decipher.

Yeah! Some of you people are too busy minding what others are doing when you should be looking in the mirror. Let the mods do their job, and if you see something a little out of kilter, let them know.

Sarcasm? Many of you wouldn't know sarcasm if it slapped you in the face. If you think I'm joking, just look back at all of the times I've gotten in trouble using it.

I do agree that the title of many, many threads should be a little more explicit. I can't count how many times I've opened a thread only to find that it is about darksiders (which I don't collect) or paper money (which I don't collect) or roll searching (which I stopped years and years ago) or bullion (which I don't collect). The righthand column for "Recent Threads" doesn't segregate topics by forum, so you should try to make it easier for the prospective reader.

I've only had time to skim through the responses to this thread...but I'm going to throw my two cents in anyway. As a member of this community (not a member of it's staff)...I believe that limiting the number of posts any member can make would destroy the point of CT. CT is here for its members to learn from one another. I know that new members occasionally make "dumb" (for lack of a better word) posts in some people's eyes...but that's because they don't know. One of my dental instructors once said: "When you have known something for so long, it's hard to remember what is was like before you knew it." I think this is especially true here. Many of us have been in this hobby for years and have answered the same newbie questions a thousand times. But, for each newbie it's first time they have heard it. Bottom line, CT is for learning...and when you limit the number of questions you can ask then learning stops.
