    2006 proofs

I received mine today also. Got an e-mail yesterday informing me it was shipped. Took 1 day.
I also noticed the coins seemed like weak strikes, they just didn't seem as nice this year.

Got my proofs today and ordered silver proofs over the wekend..should get them soon. I had a question previously..didnt get a reply..would the coins be worth more or less if they were taken out and put into plastic coin hoilders and sold as individual coins?? Just curious

Typically yes, but it's not always true. Ever hear the saying the sum of the parts is greater than the whole ? The reason for this is because there are collectors who have no interest in the sets - they only want a coin or two for their series collection. And with new issue Proof sets it likely won't be true for some time because anybody who wants them can buy them from the mint until next year.

I'm planning on visiting the Philadelphia mint next week, does anyone know whether these can be bought at the souvenior shop?

This may be incredibly stupid - but what if anything is the difference between proof sets and simple uncirculated sets?

Proofs are struck twice, and use specially prepared planchets, all modern US proofs also have frosted devices. There are other differences but I will let others fill in the blanks.

Nah, not stupid, we all have stuff to learn...

Coins produced in a ""Proof"" strike are minted or made a bit different than the uncirculated ""Business Strike" coins... Also, I think they (proofs) have a special (nicer) planchette..

Proof coins are stamped with a special more accurate and highly polished Die, designed to look nicer... Not really made for circulation...

I don't know how true it is, but I've also read that they are struck more times and or harder to give a deeper more detailed finish and that every so many coins stamped, that have to pull the die and inspect it, fixing any imperfections or replacing it...

So, in the end you have

    Proof Coins designed for collecters
Uncicrulated Businesss Strike coins that are ment for distribution, even though they haven't made it out to the public yet...

While proofs generally have a better brighter shine I like the fact that when you get a Mint Set, you get one of each coin from each mint... Where as I think all proofs sets have the Mint (S) on them...

    No problem...

Also, Here is a question along the same lines, well about Proofs atleast...

What I want to know are what years did they produce Proof sets in Silver???

(let me know if I need to put this in its own thread, I don't want to take over the current, but thought it kinda fit)

and if you are looking at sets online, how do you tell if they are Silver? Specific color of the package/holder? Or that they say Silver on the plastic case that holds the coins??? or how???

I am trying to collect one of each year Proof sets (that I can get my hands on) and being bitten by the silver bug, I want to get the silver ones too...

Lastly, I've heard of people getting Proof Sets Certified/Graded thus making them more valuable, but to me I like them better in their original plastic holder from the Mint.... I don't think they would be as neat removed from the Mint holder and put little Slabs.. I like'em as a complete set..

The Mint started with the silver proof sets in 1992 and have continued to date

1964 and earlier - they were all silver.

The truth about Proof coins is that the Mint really has people that used to be politicians sitting at tables with Blue Coral Auto Wax and polishing coins. These coins are then put into plastic holders by Trained Chimps so they can advertise them as never being handled by people. They are sealed so you can not tell that they are nothing but auto type polished coins. The main reason for any delays in the shipping of your sets is purly due to the abundance of banannas. If the Chimps are not properly fed, just like any government employee, they bog down. :) :) :)

Mine arrived a few days ago, less than a week after I ordered them.

I was especially impressed with the Statehood Quarters. In my mind, they are the best of any year so far.
