My personal opinion is - yes. No harsh cleaning and it looks acceptable to me.

Nice coins everyone - including the bust half.

I posted this newp earlier in this thread. I also noted a few spots on the reverse that looked to be PVC (or verdigris). I didn't want to treat them myself because I was afraid the colorful coin might never get back into a problem-free holder. So I sent the IHC to PCGS for a free spot review and asked them to take care of it.

They were quick about it this time. Usually it takes months for them to conserve a coin (which is something they will quietly do if they can rescue the coin and avoid a guarantee payout). I suppose they used acetone, or maybe their own tried-and-true chemicals.

As you can see there was a significant, though maybe not unfortunate, change in the appearance. I kind of like it.

I thought some of you might be interested. We always say acetone is 100% safe but then add be careful with copper, especially red or colorful copper. I haven't seen any problem with acetone of xylene on brown copper.

Does this trouble you...TPG's working on coins to prevent future damage? Or do you like it and think it's a great benefit?

Here are before and after photos. The very slight PVC on the reverse was at the rim 6 o'clock, wreath edge at 10 o'clock, and inside the O in ONE.

Do they charge for this spot review?

PS - still a nice coin. Not sure which I like best, but leaning towards second set since it seems to be more brown.

Lance, I love your 1878 Indian Cent. Both sets of photos are REALLY nice. It's great those spots are gone. I HATE SPOTS! I am surprised how much the color changed though!!! The color of both sets offers some pro's and cons: The deep rich color of set one is killer, however the variation you picked up in set two is also really nice (I love the violet color on the headdress on #2)

How much did PCGS charge for this service?
So it's called "free spot review"?

By the way, I got this coin in the mail on Saturday. The color was not as red as in the sellers photos, but it's still a stunning coin. I color corrected the bottom photo to match the coin in hand. This coin has fantastic luster and amazing color that really changes as you roll it around in the light.

    The original sellers photo:

The true color of this coin is more amber/orange and I love the tinges of violet and green.

No, it's free. Of course the collector has to pay shipping and insurance both ways. Or you can submit at a show and save the "sending" costs.

You've got a gorgeous Barber dime there. Let me guess, MS64? Sharp strike also.

Ikeigwin; My preference is for the coin before it was conserved. I love that fiery red amongst the brown tones with these IHCs. I have Indians that look like that and they are my favorites!

Thanks Lance. I think I might have a PCGS graded large cent with a little spot on it. I will have to look at them when I get a chance.

The color more so than the lines - at least in my opinion. And to me everything looks acceptable. For the lines I think I see I would want to see it in hand.

Thanks. :) It does seem to have a sharp strike. The coin is still raw, though, so I don't know how it will grade. Knowing my luck with TPGs, it will probably come back as an AU.

I'm starting to like circulated comm. halfs. This looks cleaned to me but I still like the coin. 1925 Stone Mtn-tile.jpg
