OK, I had to post this. Check out this rare slabbed 1956-D cent. I love the ad: http://cgi.ebay.com/1956-D-LINCOLN-...65?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3a682642a9
My question is why would PCGS slab a coin that clearly has adverse surface conditions like that coin does? On both sides, even...
Question One: Why would anybody slab this? My Guess: Possibly for a series grade set. I bought a 1906 IHC PCGS VG8 from a guy who started doing this but gave up. Question Two: Why $2Mil? My Guess: Free publicity. This auction had 2463 hits when I looked at it just a few minutes ago. Plus, no fees if it doesn't sell. Question Three: Isn't my PCGS VG8 IHC worth at least $1Mil? My Guess: No way, but the free exposure to my other listings....Priceless!!!
It makes me think the guy is an idiot and/or attention wh*** so I would never bid on one of his other auctions.
I agree with that and raise the dealer's stupidity by one: They sell coins in "SEGS" grading slabs! RUN from any dealer that doesn't break coins out of basement slabs before trying to sell them to you!
I stumbled upon this earlier today too. Maybe the person who sent it in for grading thought it may have been an error of some kind or maybe 2 people were arguing over the grade of the coin and they placed a wager on what the grade would be. I can't think of any other reason to slab it but who knows?
I contacted an eBay seller, who still sells, Jesspetersen is her account name on the 'bay, she has tons of slabs from many different companies, she said that her father, emphasized the coins in his will, that he kept because they were not common in todays circulation, but have little value, and he made sure that they were split between his children by value, so they all were submitted by lawyers to grading companies to help determine the value. I do not know if this is true or not, maybe she just deals in slabs and sells them for 6-10 bucks each on eBay with common coins in them, but it sounds plausible except for all the grading fees involved.
It is clear this guy is either trying to be funny, cute, or entertaining. Sadly, he has fallen into none of these categories. Annoying, pathetic, and foolish come to mind however.
Here this one is a little bit cheaper than the OP and its one of a kind also but a morgan dollar http://cgi.ebay.com/One-Kind-1886-O...44?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5adf3018a4
Basement, basement, basement... SEGS IS NOT A BASEMENT GRADING COMPANY! We have been in business almost 15 years and we pay full retail for a store front. We will also put our knowledge and grading skills against anyone... anytime.
The add is obviously just a joke. I laughed. Doesn't anyone else have a sense of humor? Geesh! It's just a joke.
