Someone did some awful messed up things to this coin. Maybe acid, dip, hammer, spoon, file who knows. The reeding, however, is recessed between the outer clad layers. The diameter, weight, sound and feel is the same a non-abused quarter. Wondering how the reeding is recessed yet the diameter is the same a a normal quarter? Maybe it was filed or sanded? Wondering also why people do this to coins.

It was probably soaked in acid. The acid eats away the soft copper faster than the harder copper-nickel cladding.

I've caught a few of these myself. I quickly returned them into circulation.
