I prefer AU and EF coins. They usually show all the detail and beauty of a MS coin, and at 1/10 the cost. I always found it strange to see a completed set of coins where they range from G to MS. I'd rather see the the entire set in two or three closely related grades that look more or less the same.

Not weird, just a good coin observer like the rest of us. Nice old coins are great. I like a lot of Gs, and F coins. I can afford them.

Collect what you enjoy and can afford. The 1921 Peace started me collecting circulated Peace Dollars. The nickel started my buffalo herd.

Man dwhiz, that's one pretty Buffalo! You obviously have good taste in coins, but what's with the Phillies "thingy." :D

If it's for investment purposes, I look for the coin in the best condition I can find and afford. If not, then it's history and example comes into play. If it's to add to a hoard, nothing matters.

No, you're not weird Augie, just different. Most us older guys here started out collecting worn stuff so we can appreciate your view. Back then you never thought of buying a coin (at least I didn't). That was only done as a last resort for a date that was impossible to snag out of the pocket change.
Oh, BTW. Along with collecting Classical Commems in mint state, I also enjoy collecting worn examples too. It is nice to see coins of this type in "used" condition. Dat make me weird?

I have to concur with the others. There's a lot right with a well-worn coin; you can show it around and talk about it without worrying about damaging it. Once a coin's gone to F or VG, it takes some real carelessness to knock it down to a lower grade. With an MS-65, one slip and...

Granted that MS coins are much prettier, but they have to be handled carefully. Not a problem if you have friends who like to go to museums, but it does look a little odd to the casual set. Also, I like to have coins that I can dig out and gawp over without worrying about whether I should be wearing gloves, or if I should wash my hands for a third time.

I collect halves almost exclusively. I don't own a grade above XF, simply because I love the toning of a piece that has seen a few hands. Much more eye-appealing to me.

Like most have said, collect what you like.
