I see coins being sold on eBay in slabs from National Numismatic Certification. Is this a legitimate company? If so, how reliable are they? :rollling:
Define legitimate? Every grading company is real. There are no guidelines to becoming a grading company. Have they cornered the market like PCGS or NGC? no Is their grading considered accurate among collectors? no Should you always buy the coin and not the slab? yes - a message from GGS (gbroke grading service)
Well, they do have a website: http://www.nnccoingrading.com/ Of course, that doesn't make them legitimate (in the sense that the OP is interested in). I guess in the overall breakdown of TPG's, they reside somewhere in the middle of the third tier (self slabbers).
It is absolutely real and absolutely a legitimate company. And centsles (eBay name, don't know his real name) does a fine job of overgrading every one of his own coins. BTW, for as lousy as his personal grading is, his customer service at least used to be top notch.
Quote from their web site. "Limitation of Liability for Grading: All parties understand and agree that the professional opinion required in grading coins involves NNC's subjective judgment. Consequently, National Numismatic Certification, LLC. makes no warranty or representation and shall have no liability whatsoever to the customer for the grade assigned by NNC to any coin." Guy used to have great service on eBay and when he was selling PCGS graded coins I bought from him. Gues he just got tired of paying to have a service that would guarentee their grades do the grading.
NNC is a legitimate TPG which has been in business since before 2006. However, they are not necessarily a "respected" TPG which is the difference between them and "perceived" real TPG's. I say "perceived" because lots of folks "repect" their opinions which may or may not be factual. I recently received a coin graded at MS63 which previously had been graded as Genuine Cleaned. I passed it around to some "respected" dealers who graded it from MS64 to MS65. So, it becomes a puyre matter of respect vs legitimacy. Oh, I guess a cash back grade guarantee has something to do with it as well even though the "cash back" never coincides with their published price guides but thats a different story.
Top 3 are ANACS, NGC & PCGS. No special order but I do perfer the older white slabs from ANACS & NGC Just MHO
