Hi all I have a question on this penny , I included pics three the best I could do . It appears that the letters in the words United States of America have been stamped 2 or 3 times on top of each other , the serifs don’t look correct either , example look at the letter N in united , the letter E is nothing but a solid block with no definition . It looks like the die was worn and they tried to repair it ? What you guys think

Not much of an expert on doubled dies, but from the bit that I know it looks like mechanical doubling. The doubling is flat and shelf like and that usually indicates MD. It could also be a worn die issue, but they wouldn't have tried t repair it, they would have just brought in a new die when it was totally spent.

That’s how these come out sometimes. BTW, they stamp stamps, they strike coins.

Looks like a worn die issue to me. With flat doubling on both sides of a letter, it fits the worn die theory. JMHO

To me it looks like the die should have been replaced.

Thanks gentlemen , does any of the grading houses recognize the longacre doubling as an error , Herbert's book list this error as ll-A-22 , he describes the error as repunching worn letters in a die , and possibly with a worn letters punch , I stand corrected I used the word stamped not punched , the word strike is not used in this error either .
