Got around to upgrading my coin of Licinius. Thought I'd share, though he doesnt seem to be a very popular emperor Licinius I, AE Follis. Obv: IMP LIC LICINIVS PF AVG, laureate, draped, cuirassed Rev: IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG NN, Jupiter standing facing with head left, chlamys hanging from left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and leaning on sceptre, eagle with wreath left. B in right field. Mintmark: SIS.
Agree. Licinius suffers from being very common but lacks the added appeal Constantine gets from being Christian. There are so many of the Genius coins from Diocletian through Constantine that a lot of people find them ordinary. Yours is a good example of a very formal, stylized portrait common in that day but Siscia is not my favorite mint either so I guess I'll just say this is a decent example of a period in coinage that most of us find less than interesting. I once knew one specialist in Licinius (since passed away) but he is, as you say, not very popular. Recall not that long ago I showed coins from Baltimore that I considered ordinary and two of them were Licinius: http://www.cointalk.com/t182391/ He gets no respect.
A double negative XD Licinius and SIS  I actually almost got one of Dioccletian/Genius instead of this one, but was twice the price.
I have a Galerius/Genius I got for $10 in Long Beach this past Feb. It is one of my least favorite coins but I thought $10 was a decent price for type. I think Genius & Wreath reverses are my least favorite on ancients.
I love your coin Randy. I am going to get more serious about getting more of those cool, "art deco" obverses. I have always liked them but have not pursued them actively. I find Licinius interesting in his coin types. You ever see the "tiny bust" examples. I swear, I about bought one just because it was comical how tiny the little emperor was, the bust was literally almost the size of the letters. Cool pickup man.
Yes, of course Doug is right, (you too Mat) Licinius II. I saw one in a group I took a double take, the die master used larger than normal lettering, and shrunk the bust even further than that example to fit it in the coin. I swear the bust was barely larger than the letter size. I will buy it next time, I keep thinking about that stupid coin so much. I still say I love this Licinius I coin a lot. I love this type of bust representation the more I think about it, the bigger the neck the better. I already have some snipes set up on them. Chris
haha, my least favorate coin is Galerius too XD GALERIUS, 305-311 AD. Æ Follis as Augustus of Kyzikos. Laureate head / Genius standing holding patera and cornucopia. MKV in ex RIC.65. Thanks! I'd like to get a tiny bust too as well as a super long neck Probus. This is definatly a style that had to grow on me though. I still prefer early imperials though.
