I found this coin in a dealers "junk" box a few years ago. It looks like it has been washed off with water, but does not appear to have been dipped. I would like to know if anyone can maybe help ID the coin. It is slightly larger than a US dime. My attempts at identifying the coin were not the most successful. It appears Roman (I think the portrait is Octavian) and the figures & oxen plowing on the reverse may indicate a colony (possibly former soldier's colony) but nothing further than that. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks. Gene
I'm pretty sure that you're right with what you figured out. Unfortunately, I don't know provincials of this era well enough to narrow it down further, particularly without surviving text. I don't suppose you can make any text out if you hold it at a weird angle or anything, can you?
Unfortunately there is no text that I can see on the coin. I even used a jewelers loop. No text, no other details. Only the portrait on the obverse and the two figures & oxen on the reverse. Thank you for your response, it certainly is more info than I had. I have been fascinated by ancients since I was a little kid.
Macedon, Uncertain city (perhaps Philippi?). Augustus. Bare head right / Two founders driving yoke of oxen right, plowing pomerium. RPC I 1656
Yes, thank you, that appears to be what this coin is. I appreciate the help you and Gao provided, it was most appreciated.
