Hi everybody, this is my first post so please go easy on me :smile I have been collecting for only one year now and am very new to this game! I visited Gibraltar earlier this year and stumbled into an antiques shop and negotiated with the shop owner to buy a drawer full of coins in bulk for one set price. My wife thinks I'm mad by the way!?!?!? The result is that I walked away with the following but have no clue to what its worth and was wondering if anyone could help me? I got a feeling that I got my monies worth but I need input and advice from those more experianced :smile 1 x 1906 1 oz silver (American) dollar coin 2 x 1877 5 peseta (Espanan) coins 3 x 1871 5 peseta (Espana) coins 1 x 1933 1 peso (Cuba) coin 1 x 1953 1 peso (Cuba) coin 1 x 1965 silver (British) penny 6 x 1944 500 lei (Romanian) coins 2 x 1946 10'000 lei (Romanian) coins 76 x 1942 200 lei (Romanian) coins 1 x 1901 1 lei (Romanian) coin 1 x 1910 1 lei (Romanian) coin 1 x 1911 1 lei (Romanian) coin 1 x 1875 2 lei (Romanian) coin 1 x 1900 50 bani (Romanian) coin
A lot of the value would depend upon how many of them are silver. One more thing: you'll likely be asked to post pictures. The value of the coins, particularly the non-silver ones, depends heavily upon their condition. They can't be assessed here without pictures of them.
Gibraltar was a great place! I particularly remember a tattoo parlor that had an extremely attractive artist named Tracy working there...and having Scrumpy Jack cider at the peak of the Rock. Didn't see a coin shop, though... Check out worldcoingallery.com to look up the silver content of your coins - if any have a better numismatic value I'd check out a coin shop that has those books. They are quite expensive but very nice...
Um, I am wondering what a 1906 US Dollar is? They did not make any US dollars between 1905 and 1920 as far as I remember.
Or it could be a typo, and actually be a 1996 silver eagle, since it is a 1 ounce silver dollar coin.
Hi all, Many thanks for the replies so far, I have made my first attempt at uploading the photos of the 1906 US dollar and the 1965 British penny. hope this helps us out a bit!?!? If anyone thinks I should uload more photos then give me a shout. :smile
Thanks for the feedback, I've uploaded some more photos which show the coin better. Any furthar comments and feedback is more than welcome
I can't say either way if this is a counterfit. It certainly has a strange patina on it, and heavy wear. Can you weigh this bad girl and see if she is magnetic?
Hmmm, yes, it is magnetic!?!?!? And, I've also noticed that there is some strange imprinting around the outer edge above 'United' and '1 Oz. Fine', I've uploaded another picture to let us get a closer look. Do you think its a fake???
Silver is non-magnetic. So I think that is a fake. Someone correct me please if I have mispoken. edit: I double checked, if it's magnetic it's a fake. It is most likely copper made to look like silver. Sorry
I'm guessing that it may be some kind of replica, but of what, because as was mentioned earlier in the thread; no silver dollar was minted in 1906!?!?!? If anyone can help us any furthar than I'd be ever so pleased
I have uploaded a couple of photos below and the coin is not magnetic. So far, it seems as though I may have some fakes on my hands Not good.... but we live and learn I suppose!
i agree, since a magnet stuck to it, i think it's a fake. plus, the date looks very strange. almost looks like it was tooled to say 1906.
It is in fact a counterfit 1996 ASE. They just either messed up the date, it wore off, or was tooled.
Copper isn't magnetic, either. That fake silver eagle is probably made of either pure nickel, or (more likely) iron/steel.
I guess I should clarify-- the UK did make a special silver penny in 1965, called a Maundy Penny, but it is tiny, much smaller than even the current 5p coin. The coin you have appears to be a silver-plated regular 9.4-gram copper penny.
