My sister works at an airport, and weird coinage comes through there A LOT, including foreign coins and old US coinage. Well today she came over and brought with her 4 wheat pennies, 3 buffalo nickels, and a mercury dime. Man I flipped a lid when she showed me the mercury dime (my second favorite coin.) She told me I could have the wheat pennies but she was keeping the rest. I even made her an offer of $15 for all the buffalos and the mercury dime and she still declined. But anyway, when she handed me the wheat pennies two of them were cleaned. I could tell right away. I asked her if she got them like this and she said no, they were really dirty and her co-workers and herself dipped them in acid. My heart sank and I quickly checked to make sure they wernt key dates or anything, which they wernt so I was relieved. This brings my wheat total up to 12. from left to right: 1946 D, 1947 D, 1946, and a 1944.
Acid!! ... Ouch, that hurts. Like you say they're not key dates so that eases the pain a bit. What date was the Merc by the way? Bruce
You are probably lucky your sister passed on the $15 deal. The merc was probably a common date worth melt, and the buffalo nickels were likely well circulated common dates as well. I have a special place in my heart for wheaties, too. I can't find the heart to get rid of any of mine.
Classic....they were dirty so we cleaned 'em up! LOLOL I think the $15 offer was way too high....she screwed up there.
The Merc was just a 1937. Nothing important to most, but to me it was. The Buffalos were pretty worn. But I REALLY wanted them and the merc, and she came over to show em to me so I thought id help her with gas money it was way to high, but I was willing to do it since it was my sister Anyone wanna sell me some mercs and buffalos? lol
Are you sure she meant acid? Someone without coin knowledge would be more apt to clean them with a household product like dishwashing soap, just running water on them or even toothpaste. Didn't this come up on the previous coins she found? I would be dissappointed with my sister if she didn't check with me first since she brought them over to be looked at. She must know you collect, or have an interest in them, to do this.
ya, it was like the jewlers acid stuff that they use. She knows I collect but didnt know that would ruin them if they had any value. I told her not to clean em anymore. She only cleaned the two wheats though thank god. They were at work when she and her coworker did it. I also told her for coins she think are special and I might want, to hold em by the rim. I really dont care to much that they were cleaned considering they arn key dates, and they are still going in my folder lol Coins she found for me before, or just coins she found, she hasnt "cleaned"
nah im gonna keep em, its still hard to come across em for me But thats brings up a boring story. I went to McDonalds, bought two McDoubles, and handed the cashier three dollar coins. NO reaction at all...just handed me my change. That made me sad lol
