odd looking 1951 D penny

    hey! I found this penny today while cleaning up around the house and was wondering if this is some type of error coin? thanks in advance for ya'lls advice!!

    Looks to me like someone was playing around with a soldering iron. I would think it just ruined that coin is all.

    Hard to tell from the photos but it could be glue.

    it looks like it was melted, but how hot does it have to be for a penny to melt?

    I agree with hobo ... This does look like some type of goop dried up on the coin. I have found them with all kinds of junk dried up on them and sometimes it's really hard to remove this stuff.

    Probably melted by the sun or some other type of heat

    You know, it's been hot here on the east coast of the U.S.... but you could lay a Lincoln cent out in the sun for as long as you want and you could still pick it up. So I'll opt for "some other type of heat".
