This is a very tough one. I will be very surprised if anyone guesses correctly (except GDJMSP). Enjoy...Mike
I'll guess it's a brilliant finish proof-65. It looks too well struck to be an MS, although I am frequently wrong.
I would also think that it might be a proof....it doesn't look centered very good but that may be where it is in a slab.... I'm going to say PF64....because the little black spots on the face take it down some for me. Mike.....I was just thinking about you lastnight.....I had missed this type of thread and was wondering when you would be back posting some!!! Speedy
I've been busy with work and life and haven't had a chance to stop by and post. Have gotten a few new coins, including the one above, and just thought I'd stop by and share. HINT: The coin is off-center in an old NGC holder. It is struck centered.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I happen to know that particular coin so posting my answer would be like cheating. I will say this - I disagree with the grade assigned.
I don't have much experience with proof Buffalos but this being a 1936 and not an older date doesn't look proof to me so I'll go with an MS64 . The older date proofs seem near impossible to tell apart from the good MS counterparts. Maybe someone here can tell me what differences to look for. Thanks
PF/MS63? I don't know how to tell a proof from a business strike yet (newer proofs are obvious, but not this). Now that I've decided to collect Buffalo's (hoping to do an AU or better set) and I'm trying to grade them I think they might be one of the hardest coins to "read". At least in my short one week experience with grading anything. ~Brian
Well, it doesn't look like a proof to me, so I'm going to hazard a guess of: MS-62 Love the toning, but I can't tell if the spots are on the coin or the holder.
Never mind. I think this coin phot makes it look better than it is. The strike is not as detailed as it could be, especially the reverse. I give it an MS63. Ruben
The coin is graded Satin PF 67. The coin is in an old NGC holder. I did not take the photos of the coin, but they were taken with the coin lit from an odd angle, which may have thrown some of you off with respect to strength of strike. Also, the specks on the coin are toning spots, and the photos make them look worse than they appear on the coin itself. I do not have the coin in-hand, but it should be here this week, so I'll post some additional photos and thoughts on the coin then. Thanks for all your responses...Mike
Nice.....I thought the strike looked alittle too good not to be a proof...some of the detail was just great! Can't wait to see more photos. Speedy
I don't mean to speak for Greg, but I did have a discussion on the coin with him and in his opinion the coin got a bump in grade because of the color....Mike
