I was looking at the 1965-70 half dollars that I found the other day, and I was just wondering why some of them do not have mint marks. The years include 1965, 1966, and 1967. All of the 68, and 69 have mint marks. So what do those years not have a mint mark? Thanks guys
It was the dreaded coin shortage from back in that day 52Chevy. The powers that be, back then, determined that it was "coin collectors" who where causing the shortage by hoarding coins. Nothing could be further from the truth.....still, the powers that be determined that the mint mark should be left off the coins so that the "evil" coin collectors would no longer hoard the coins.
All 66 & 67 halves have MM's only because they were not made in Philadelphia. Philadelphia did not start using MM's until 1980 on any coin and cents still do not have MM's from Philadelphia
So, I have 2 65's, 3 66's, 5 67's, 4 68's D, and 4 69's D. I am thinking about selling 20 of them as a roll on ebay. What do you guys think?
The powers that be felt that if the mint mark was left off, then coin collectors wouldn't know from which mint the coins originated from. Every one knows that "evil" collectors are looking for rare and "low" mintages so what better way to thwart them than to leave the mint mark off the coin.....
As stated above, no coins minted 1965-1967 have a mintmark, regardless of where they were minted. You might want to recheck that information.
It bureaucracy at it's finest. It must be coin collectors causing a shortage of coins. It couldn't be that they had decided to stop making coins containing silver and thus making the new coins mere tokens. Why would the public hoard circulating coins with silver?
And now the evil coin collectors are hoarding the Presidential Dollars, and spending thousands of dollars in taxpayer money to store them! Opps, I guess that is the Federal Reserve.
Actually, with the bill to end the program in place, they know these aren't being used. Due to the Mints recent change in how the 'Direct Ship' program for Prez dollars are paid for (wire transfer, check...but NO CC's or debit cards), I think it shows us that they think it IS the collector's fault they sit in the Fed (the gov't thinking that it's our fault...but regardless, they'd be sitting somewhere, not in daily usage, no matter what....because noone likes/wants them). Due to our taking advantage of the loophole, a totally legal loophole, and getting miles and miles on our CC's, then dumping them right back into the machine, they seem to be blaming us collectors, given payment options. Who in the world mails checks, nowadays? We have become used to instant payment and expedited shipping. Noone is going to want to wait weeks to mail a check, then wait for it to clear and then have them ship, like it was way back when. It's '65-'67 all over again.
Man, all this time I been thinking it had something to do with fooling the Russians during the Cold War. Thanks for setting me straight guys. I had pictures of James Bond type conspiracies and stuff. WoW. Who woulda thought ?
