Unless you collect the more modern series ie: Roosevelt dimes, Jefferson nickels, Kennedy halves, Franklin Halves. There will always be a key date's to contend with. Your young yet,start a set that you like and if it takes you 30 years to complete it, so be it,that's what it will take. Buy quality coins not damaged,cleaned,ugly and you won't go wrong. If you buy a G4 coin make sure its a G4 coin etc. This is a hobby that you will enjoy for a lifetime. just take your time and do it right
They aren't difficult to find but can get quite pricey in the higher grades. There are three types of silver three-cent pieces. In EF grade, a set of the 4 type 1's would run about $600. A set of the 5 type s'2 would go for about $1200. A set of the 14 type 3's would be about $6000. Add 1862/1 for another $150 and you have close to $8000 involved. A full VF set would be about 2/3 this amount. Most in G can be had for $20-30, except for the later 1863-1872 which would be about $250-300 each.
I think it would be a great set in low grade to collect. Challenging yet not too expensive. It would require patience -- and that's a lesson most collectors need to learn at some point in their evolution.
i set myself a quest to collect one example of each british shilling from edward VI to elizabeth II, it took me 35 years and an awful lot of money.......
I might suggest doing a silver 3 cent type set instead. An XF set of the three varieties could be done for about $300. Less if you opt for a lower grade.
I agree with the type set solution. Up until 1863, the series is very affordable. It's only after 1863 that it gets expensive. There are 3 different types, and one mint mark "O". This set would be very good and affordable, even at the AU grade (depending on your budget). Have fun.
