Not sure if I've got this in the right forum, but here goes. I bought the 1981 proof set yesterday and didn't realize, until I got home, that there are two varieties--First S and Clear S (all 6 coins). From looking at mine, they all seem to be clear s.....am I seeing things? Pics are here http://s1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/MrChipster/1981 Proof Set/
Yes....I was about to get excited because I assumed "clear s" simply meant it was "clear." I finally found a site that gave a better explanation. Thanks for responding, anyway.
I knew about the '79, but I didn't know about the '81 until after I bought it. The "Red Book" lists the 2 types as "First S", and "Clear S" for '81 and "Filled S" and "Clear S" for '79. I jumped the gun in assuming that clear meant clear (as opposed to filled). I've learned a little more today.
The 1979 Type I is the one with the "blob" mint mark (common), the 1979 Type II "clear S" (rarer) is actually the one used for the 1981 Type I mint mark. The 1981 Type II has a mint mark where the fields can be seen in the loops of the S and is a bit rarer than the Type I. It appears your coins are all Type I
here's a page that has some good comparison photos: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...st&tbm=isch&prmd=ivns&ei=HUIoTtydIfHKsQKSw507 and I agree. Your coins appear to be type 1
Again, thanks for all the comments. As I stated above, I stumbled onto a website yesterday that explained the differences shortly after I posted this thread. I agree.....Type I. Thanks again.
