Just wondering what other people think about the artwork on modern coinage. A lot of the new quarters have been attacked for bad artwork. I kind of agree. I like the presidential dollars a lot. Its great to have portraits of all our past presidents on a coin! My favorite modern coin hands down is the 2007 jamestown commemorative silver dollar. When I was first handed this coin on the grading table at an NGC class, I was breathtaken by its beauty. Everyone in this country was taught about Jamestown, the pilgrims and indians, and those 3 famous ships. I never wanted to get into collecting commemoratives, but this coin did its job and got me hooked!
Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think "modern" might be from 1982 to present ... corresponding to the restarting of the commemorative coin program. Modern Commemoratives (1982-present) vs. Classic Commemoratives (1892-1954) I agree, the Jamestown is a good one. I especially like the ships on the reverse. I think the Medal of Honor $5 Gold Commemorative is nicely done as well. (I recently bought one of these.) I like the two cannons and the throwback Miss Liberty holding a shield and a flag. It has a Civil War flavor to it, one of my favorite periods of history. I think it might be the first attempt at a new allegorical Miss Liberty by the U.S Mint in quite some time.
I agree, the reverse of the MOH gold coin is terrific but it is the original MOH design it is not a modern design. I guess old designs on new coins qualify.
They probably weren't taught too much about Jamestown. None of the pictured people are pilgrims, and there were no negros at the founding of Jamestown (the first ones were brought there twelve years later) so the person at the left is an anachronism. And just what are those three famous ships? I have to admit I don't know what their names were. OK did some searching and now I know, Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed. Never heard of them before.
Ive always liked the sacagawea dollar design. I also think the Platinum bullion coins have some great designs too.
Never seen this one before! The obverse is fantastic. The reverse ..not so much. Wish I could afford it.
Interesting. So far all of the posted designs are of "older" coins which reinforces my belief that that the best designs are on older coins. however, I don't know what the definition of a modern coin is. Maybe the 1935 Wisconsin comm is considered a modern coin. Winged Liberty your coin website are amazing!
No, it's a Classic Commem. I was naughty in posting it. Just love the design. Don't know why. Maybe, perhaps, because I've always wanted to go there. Maybe, perhaps, because I've lusted after classic commem's since the age of 12 or 13.....
An older design on a much younger coin, an 2006 Franklin "Founding Father". Most of the originals are worn beyond relief, but a re-submission of the design in "modern times" gives us modern guys something to really appreciate in the classical sense......
