Myself I collect coins, but my girlfriend has been collecting Notes, mostly offa Fle-Bay and Swapmeets and Flea Markets... She collects them becasue she likes them and shes doesn't care what their worth... I like it because I have seen here blow way more than face on a note, so now she can't say anything when I spend above face on a Coin... The reason for my post is, I was looking for info on Notes... Here are my main two questions 1. How do you tell what year it was minted/Printed? I thought I read somewhere that the Series number was not exactly the date a note was printed, but more of the date that a certain the person in a certain Position at the Federal Reserve changed and the letter following the date (1943a) was from the person ina second position changing.. I don't know if I am just remembering it like that or if there is a least a bit of truth to it... 2. Is there a webpage that has an example of eac type of bill (1, 2, 5, 10. 100, etc.. etc..) that tells what all the numbers in various places means? 3. Lastly, are there any sites that just have facts/funfun/trivia whatever about the things on a bill???
I don't think we can tell what years the notes were printed in, unless the notes explicitly tells you when they were printed. But often, we should be able to get a rough idea when they are printed using a catalogue...
I don't know about websites, but the "Official BLACKBOOK price guide to UNITED STATES PAPER MONEY may answer most of your questions. On dates, the year noted is the first year the series was printed. You can also check here: http://www.bep.treas.gov/document.cfm/5/44/95
This guy has an awesome site. http://www.fstctycurr.com/index.html He sells a lot too so your girlfriend may wind up spending some cash. In the box on the left click BEP Reports. His list starts in 1981 and goes to present. Each month lists every note printed in that month for that year. For example January of 1995 we see that series 1993 $1.00 notes, block B-E printed serial ranges 12800001 to 76800000. So on and so forth. He also has a book coming out with all this info as well. Happy hunting, Michael
