Is the Image Good Enough to Grade This Coin?

I'm not asking you to grade this coin.
I'm asking you if this image is good enough to allow you to reasonably grade the coin.

If I called this coin MS-64 would you agree based on what you can see in the image?

    I thought I posted, but maybe I didn't...

I would say, based on the pic above, no; it's not good enough to grade. That's not saying much since I'm 25 and have coke bottle glasses, but it seems too small and blurry for me to distinguish any wear. Lighting looks good though.

    Just checking.
Did you click on the image to expand it to the larger size?

I asked the original question because I have all those images.
And I want to sell them (the coins; not the images).
For best results I need to give potential buyers the ability to agree/disagree with my accessment.
I would like to avoid redoing them all (80 coins).

But since I'll be using eBay the exact grade is moot since I can't use numeric grades with raw coins.
But a numeric grade would be important in determining a starting price.

Crop the pics down so you can just see a tiny portion of the background around the edges. That will help allow you to increase your picture size. As it is, no, I cannot grade the coin.

I did and the issue of concern is that I can't tell the details. For example, eagle feather tips, distinguished arrows, breast feathers were lacking and look blended. I also have difficulty destinguishing Washington's hair line and cheek bone. Again, not that I'm picky or am greatly familiar with the Washington series for grading, but if was looking at this coin to purchase I would immediately think, great luster, possibly high grade, but better pics would be needed.

Okay, this is the best I can do with the images I've saved.
Click on it to get the max size.

If it's not good enough, I have two choices:
    - re-image all 80 coins
    - live with it
At least the hourglass reflectivity come through nicely.

I would say no as the dark areas on the images may be hiding flaws

Personally, I like that pic better for the details of the coin.

By the way, don't let me sway you...might be good to hear other opinions as well.

IMO, Your photo shows enough detail to provoke someone's interest. I zoomed in 400% and saw an image that I believe would give someone confidence in buying the coin providing the coin is offered by a reputable seller and it comes with a return policy. I think your photo is fine for selling on the internet. I don't recommend that you re-take 80 photos unless you feel the photos don't look like the coin in hand.

That is the probably the most important issue with the 80 photos. They should look like the coin in hand or include some additional description. Otherwise, you will get returns.

I do my raw coins with a scanner for inventory purposes.
Originally I did them at 300 dpi, then reduced the images to the size you see.
For disk space purposes, once the resize was done, I'd delete the originals.
    (I don't do that anymore.)
Now that I'm going to sell I have to try to get a feeling for the effort required to rescan all the coins vs. a potential dollar loss in the bidding if I go with them as is.

Hopefully a few more people will drop in and let me know their opinion.

Your pic is better but still not good enough for me. That area on the obv & close to the rim between 3 and 4 o'clock bothers me some and I'd have to be able to see that better to make a decision. Also, it looks like there might be a slight luster break on the hair curl just behind the ear. And again, I'd need better pics to judge that.

What I would do if I were you is scan your pics at 600 dpi (not 300), save them as .tif files to maintain the detail quality. Then do a Save As and save the pic as a .jpg to reduce the file size for posting purposes. This will still maintain the original detail quality for you and it will also allow you to post larger size pictures.

The luster break is a definite possibility.
These coins have been in at least 2 albums with the plastic strips (the latest is an Intercept Shield album).
So the possibility that I've turned them into sliders is all too real.
That's most likely how I'll list them.

Depends on what's going on around the obverse rim at 5 o'clock-ish. Presuming it's not too bad, I'd grade it 65. If it's really not an issue, I could see 66, and if it's a bit worse than I think a 64. Otherwise a VERY clean coin with apparently very nice luster -- what you really need for a GEM+ grade at NGC/PCGS.

Grading from pictures is hard enough when they're excellent. What you have is certainly better than most ebay auctions.

You are allowed to cite numeric grades with ebay auctions of raw coins. You just cannot put them in the titles, FWIW.
