Even without the 1877, they would be fairly expensive, costing several hundred dollars even for low grades.
Seeing as how there is a slew of key dates in that range, even poor-about good conditions will set you back a pretty penny. Get ready to crack open your piggy bank.
I picked up a 59, two 60s and a 61 recently at a local auction for $4 each. That's the price they normally go for there (flying eagles go about the same price). The mid 60s go for about $8 a piece. Granted these are not typical retail pricing.
Very expensive. I'm a kid, I'm doing 1859-2011 cents! It'll soon be complete, it'll take a long, but it will be complete.
That is not always true. I ask all the time at my local shop what some coins cost - some I buy some I don't. This is certainly not true. As to the original poster the most expensive semi-key and key dates are in that range. Just getting several of the semi keys in AG to G4 can run from 40 to 70. You might be able to beat those prices by buying problem coins. But I suggest taking your time and getting the best problem free coin you can get. The 1877 alone will run in the 400 to 700 range, again just depending on the grade/shape. Good luck on your collection. And you don't have to include the 08-s and 09-s if you don't want to.
If, you are collecting for a complete set, go for the hard ones first. Go for the best that you can afford. My sets of IH are about 95% in vf+ to unc, I do not have the 77 yet. the ones left: 1866, 1867, 1869, 1877, another one. Have a complete set of Lincolns, except for the DblDies, 90%+ unc. So, it s along trip to complete. Good luck in your quest. -O)
That's the beauty of it being YOUR collection; you can define it any way you want. Only collect the Indian Head Cents that you can afford. And if you're compelled to get the keys, get them much later down the road when you can afford them. The most important thing to remember is have fun and learn all you can while building your collection(s). -LTB
thanks everyone for your comments. Im going to take my time on them and while doing that im going to also collect other easy sets like the last 5 years of mercury dimes
