So, I just picked this up on an ebay auction for $10 + 3 for shipping and there are some spots on it, and I was wondering what they were and if they will grow or if the coin is just worth reselling and trying to pick up another one, and more importantly, what is it? It's a silver proof coin, graded PCGS PR69DCAM

I bought a silver proof eagle like that once and a dealer told me they were called milk spots and were from something they wash them with at the mint before they package them. He also said they dont hurt the value. I could be 100 percent wrong cause Im just a newbie and that was the first time I had ever seen them before. So I would get a pros advise. I know they made me upset tho because it made my coin look terrible.

I do not believe it is "milk spots", as most milk spots do not show a distinct center, but are more like a cloud. I suspect it was organic material on the coin when slabbed, and increased over time. remember that slabs are not air tight and corrosive substances, and moisture ( humidity ), continue to increase the problem. If it bothers, and it won't get better, return if possible, or sell and buy a better one. I suspect this is a main reason the seller had it on ebay.IMO.

Thats kind of what I was thinking, about the main reason they had it on ebay. Anyway, I still only ended up paying just under spot for it, so I guess I can't really lose. I'll probably just end up selling it and pick up another one some other time! Thanks both of you for your replies!

I would send the coin to PCGS under their SPOT REVIEW service. Call their customer support 800 number (listed on www.pcgs.com) for details. They should take care of the issue.

Either that, or return the coin to the seller.

The spot can be caused by many things, and it is likely to grow over time.

Gosh I wish that didn't happen but it does. I'm sure it's environment-connected but beyond that don't have a clue. :(

I would consider sending it in to them if the coin was worth more. Thanks, but I don't want to put any more money into a coin (shipping to and from PCGS) that I could just re-buy for the cost of shipping it to them :)

Although, I never knew that PCGS had a spot review service, good to know for future reference! (hopefully I'll never have to use it though!)
