Found this 1982-P quarter that has a pretty cool looking texture. Can anyone tell me what caused this?
1975-89 Philly coin 1c-50c they ran die's for to long/worn die you can find a lot coin from those year that cracks cud all sorts worn die affect are very common. finding a MS-66-68 is hard to find
Thanks for the info. What would you guys say the grade of this one is? When you're just looking at it without magnification it has a pretty neat visual effect to it.
You think so? Doesn't look like that to me. Also, if this was acid, how is there a line on the right side of the eagle on the reverse that doesn't have the effect?
I guess it's possible, i just found it like a day or so ago in a roll. I just thought it looked cool. If i get any closer pics, would that help in saying if that's what it is?
I guess I have no choice but to take everyone's word for it until I can get it checked out. I'll probably still keep it anyway. Here's a few more pics if they help. The edge looks like a regular quarter, I'm not an idiot, I know what a quarter looks and feels like.
http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Acid_dipped_Coins.jpg It does kind of look like that top one, and the rim it says melts off. Now i know what that looks like. Thanks for the help.
I found these other coins with a cool looking texture also. The first 25 cents is kind of like the one above, acid too? I'm not sure about the 5 cents.
Sorry, i thought they were cool looking. Why would someone go through all the trouble of putting acid on a coin anyway if they were just going to spend it? Apparently a few people do this? Seems like it'd be a giant waste of time.
Maybe no one did. People tend to forget that acids are everywhere and almost every liquid can be described as either an acid or a base. Take a lost quarter sitting in a puddle somewhere. In almost every case the water in that puddle, even if it is rain water, will probably be a weak acid. As the water evaporates the acid becomes more concentrated, and every time it rains the water running into the puddle brings fresh acids. All it takes then is time.
That's a good possibility. The only reason I didn't think they were done like that is because the edges don't have any damage like the surfaces do. The first one i posted awhile back in the op is in pretty good shape too, other than the texture effect anyway.
