Mexican coin side 1.jpg Mexican coin side 2.jpg

Got this coin at an auction a few years ago and was wondering what it was. The pictures aren't the best so I will try to get better ones but I don't know if I can. The side that has the eagle has REPUBLICA MEXICANA around it. The other side has LIBERITAD on the cap in the center and has *8R.M.1877.M.H.10D.20G. Above the "M" that is after the "*8R." is a small "o", above the "." after 10D is a small "s", and above the final dot after 20G is a small "s". Any ideas as to what it is and what it's value is? Thanks for the help!!

I would say if it's real it's an 8 reales. That said, there are many fakes in this series. You can get them on ebay for $40 to $60 bucks for a nice one. See what the other ppl say.

You have an 1877 8 reales coin from Mexico (8R). Your coin was minted at the Mexico CIty mint, the "M" with the small "o" above it is the mintmark. Assayer initials "M H", mint official in charge of quality of the silver. The 10Ds, 20Gs is the silver purity, it is read as 10 dineros, 20 granos. Pure silver is 12 dineros and there are 24 granos in a dinero so you have 10 and 20/24 divided by 12 = .9027 which is the silver fineness of Mexican Republic coins.

I have one of these too. And, if you're interested, so did Goethe in his coin collection.
