So I've been thinking a lot about coins I want to get more of and a thought came to my mind while looking at a 1942 Mercury Dime, I like coins in old worn condtion a lot more than mint. For example the pictures below. I think they look a lot cooler. Does anyone else perfer coins in worn condition, or am I just weird or something?
Nothing wrong with nice circulated coins. They were made with a job to do and they have clearly done their duty with honor.
Older coin series I prefer a little use to the coin. A used coin is one with a story. It's been in the pockets of people and in the register drawer and who knows where else. A mint state coin has been nowhere except a box in a safe, hiding in the dark. Guy
I prefer MS and PF coins to well circulated ones, although there are many coins that I simply can't afford in the desired condition, so I can just as easily enjoy well circulated coins too. -LTB
I'll say it depends on the series. Some look awesome worn, like the Peace Dollar. Other series look awful worn...in my opinion the Walker Half. Then again, as already mentioned, to each their own.
"Collect what you like" First rule of thumb in collecting ANYTHING. Though, a little 'homework' before shelling out $$ is always a good idea.
I too prefer a little wear on most coins. Some were such great designs that you can still make them out when well worn, (barbers and SL come to mind), but having a nice AU example around is also appreciated to really see what the designer created. Like Hobo said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Always remember, most people think we are goofy liking to collect ANY coins, let alone the type or condition. Bottom line, we are all nuts. Be nuts in whatever way makes you happiest! Chris
Good point. I would never tell especially a new collector to buy all uncirculated coins. Where is the fun, the connection? With circulated coins you can touch the coin, feel it in your hand, have a more tactile connection to it. A BU coin is either in a slab or you are afraid to touch it for fear of leaving fingerprints. I have uncirculated, high grade coins, but I do not really feel the same way about them as I do a nice ancient coin I can hold in my hand.
I agree with you Augustine and the other guys who like circulated coins. I particularly like 19th Century issues and think wear, even slight damage at times, gives the coin character. As Conder said, it shows they've done their duty. Nice clean Unc. coins are pretty to look at but somehow don't have the same effect on me. As some of you know I collect counterstamped coins, and they speaks to me in a big way historywise. I research undocumented stamps all the time and get a thrill out of finding the issuer or the reason it was stamped. Technically they're damaged, but I see a certain beauty (and opportunity) in studying them. To each his own. Bruce
I often like AU coins better than MS. In the Lincoln series there's many times when an AU is better than MS.
