I did not realize how far out of the mainstream this variety is. They have always been mainstream to me. I know the 1956 proof T 1 and T 2 are recognized by TPG's and there is a market for them.

But the 1956 varieties are not in the Red Book and they are not in the CPG. THe 1956's should be a candidate for the CPG. I kind of doubt if the CPG would list the 1958 and 1959 ones. They may be too common for a premium.

2-thing I am ask about Franklin Proof type 1&2
1956 in one the hot years for the type 1&2 rev. but what other year up to 1963 can you find a type 1&2?
I do know that 1957 there been a few found according Rick Tamaka

Here a 1957 type Eagle with a doubled right talon I think. and I 90 sure it a type 2

  5. I have been searching for the 1958/1959 Type 2 variety for a couple of years now. The 1959 is relatively easy to find especially in mint sets (although many of these have been opened up now). I believe that the 1958 is much tougher to find. I have found only two and have probably examined close to a thousand of them. I do not see the 1958 as common, but you may know more about actual mintage estimates. I actually find more Type B quarters than 1958 Type 2 Franklins. TC

The only things I have on mintage statistics are:

    1) Bill Edwards estimate of 808,400 or 20% of the 1958 were type II. He identifed 8 different versions of die cracks and die chips in the 1958 Type II's.

    2) At the present time, I have been counting 1958 halves on Teletrade. At the moment my count is 30 1958 trpe I's versus 0 1958 type II's. Yet, I have been told that there are some spectacular slabbed 1958 type type II's.

  7. Thanks for the mintage figure. I must be looking in the wrong places. I went to a big coin show earlier this year and could not find a single one 1958 Type II Franklin. I talked to several dealers after finding none at their table, and the majority said they had already picked them out and sold them off at a nice premium. Teletrade had a couple listed about a year or so ago that had incredible toning and sold at a huge premium for that reason. I just bought my second 1958 Type II online and will post pics when it arrives. TC

Bill's mintage numbers aren't official. They are based on his (and probably his friends) personal experience back in the day when they still circulated. I don't know how to explain the difference with our modern experience. I know 1962 and 1964 type B quarters seem much scarcer today compared to other type B's than they did in 1973. For that matter I have noticed 1969 D and 1972 D quarters in circulation versus 1970D and 1972 D have dropped drastically in this area in the same time period.

  11. I emailed the CPG authors this year about adding the Type II reverse Franklin to the next edition of the CPG. It is on my Christmas list, but does anyone have a copy yet and can let us know if it made it in or not. Thanks, TC

The last I heard at the Pittsburgh ANA show was that the new edition of the CPG has been put on hold as a couple of things needed to be fixed. Unless it just came out in the last week or so, I don't believe that it is out. I have been told the same thing that Proofartoncircs mentioned was that the Type I and II varieties are too common to be mentioned. But according to Mr. Edwards estimates, the 58 should at least have some mention. Over the past few months, I have been selling off my 59 DDR coins. I have been telling myself to stop looking for them, but I can't help myself from buying one when I find one. They are much more common than I expected and tend to find one or two per coin show. I would love to find a MS65FBL - the holy grail right now of this variety. PCGS has graded one I believe and NGC has none. Three out of the four MS65's on NGC are/were mine. I have one that I am getting ready to send off which could be that elusive 65FBL. I would like to give a shout out to my old bud TC! Good to see that you are still kicking.

Hey Duke! Right here at this thread there is some info. I started this thread oh so long ago to share with everyone my first two 59DDRs that I found. Proofartoncoins has also shared some great info as well on this thread. If you would like a copy of the article that is referenced here often by Bill Edwards, please shoot me a pm with you personal email attached and I will attach a copy of the article for you to read. Hope all is well.

lol I was the 9th post in this thread. Didn't realize it was a retread. It was a good read to get a refresher.
And I actually have a few type II's that I've cherry'd but no DDR's yet.

Duke, the next show that you go to, pay attention for any UNC 1959 Frankies. First of all, I just don't see them like I used to years ago. I would find rolls of them. But now, I am lucky if I find one or two at a typical show. Out of these, typically if it isn't a crowd that I have already cherried - I may find one or two. At the Pittsburgh ANA show I found about a half dozen of these types but only walked away with two. I do not buy them for anything greater than $15. Just my general rule. After slabbing costs and what nots, I have about $50 into the coin. MS64FBL will bring in anywhere from $110 to $150 generally. THe MS65 are the hard ones to get. My first one just sold for $600! Personally I think it is worth it, not just because it is mine, but rather because these are hard to find in the higher grades and both NGC and PCGS has not graded one higher than 65. As I mentioned PCGS has been the only one, to my knowledge, that has certified one MS65FBL. I hope to have one soon for NGC. These are very easy to find and can be seen with the naked eye. These types of DDs tend to be more popular with collectors than the types that you need a 16X or 20X loupe to see the DD. Personally, I think this series/variety is a sleeper and are getting more recognizion each day. When I started collecting these, NGC only had one listed on there site. THe next 10 were mine. Now there are a few more. In fact, the picture on the NGC site that they use to illustrate the DDR is my coin. I wish they had my name attributed to it. Pretty neat stuff. Good luck looking. They are out there.

  17. Hey Joe: Great to see you reply and your thread come alive again. I heard the CPG was delayed as well, but a package arrived yesterday from Whitman. It was the only coin related pub on my Christmas list so has to be it. I am hoping someone can let us know whether or not the Type II Franklins made it in or not. There are many varieties in the CPG that are not rare. I have seen some NGC 1959 DDRs on Teletrade recently. This is a great variety to cherrypick, especially with an estimated mintage of 98K. Many of these may have also been melted. TC
