Hello, Is it bad that I collect coins in G-f and some au? I cant afford like my whole collection being in au. Thanks
Heck no. Collect what grades you like and can afford. I buy coins in VG or F sometimes if that is all I can find. Collect what you can afford when you buy it. If you can afford a better grade, in the long run you will be glad you did. However, if you can only afford a VG then be happy with it. Good honest wear has never made me look down at a coin. THink about it, it did what it was supposed to do, and that is work as money for people. Have fun with your hobby. Remember, its not the coins you buy as a kid but the knowledge you learn that is most important. Chris
I don't see anything wrong with you collecting coins you can afford. If you want to collect a bunch of lower grade coins, then go ahead, it is your collection. I would say however, you might enjoy it more if you saved up for a while and bought a nice coin every once in while. Sometimes it really is quality and not quanity.
Not at all!!! I collect what I can afford, as others have said. My collection would be put to shame by most people here, much of it's circulated. Don't get me wrong I have some nice pieces, but probably 75% is circulated.
You set your own rules, and if someone makes fun of your collection, tell them to take a hike. As you grow and earn more income, your preferences may change, but you will always have that first set you put together to remind you where you started. It will be something you will always remember fondly. Chris
Good advice from the guys in here. What I would recommend is if you are working on a set with some high dollar keys in it, buy them first in the highest grade you can possible afford. That is for in the long run you aren't kicking yourself in the rear end for not buying when they were low. Nothing wrong at all with a circulated set. I still have the circulated lincoln set in the old green album my dad gave to me that he put together out of circulation. It is my prized set. Main thing is collect what you like, buy the nicest coin you can afford and have fun with it.
Not really sure how old you are, and what means of income you have available to you(part time job, or weekly allowance), but you should set a monthly budget, how much you can spend, for collecting coins, and look at venues such as eBay completed sales, Grey Sheet, etc. and see what fits into your budget. If it's only G-F graded coins, than that's what it is for now. Once you get older, and work more hours and have more funds to add to your collecting budget, you can increase the grades to fit your budget accordingly.
