I would DEF buy a high grade $1000 dollar bill. I have a $500 and its the best money ive ever spent ($1,200)
I would go to a few banks and get a crapload of $50 bills. Look for star notes and fancy serials and unc bills, keep those and repeat. Id also buy a few rolls of prez dollars from a few banks. And Id buy a machine that sorts the copper pennies from the zinc pennies and a few dozen boxes of cents and start investing in copper! Nothing beats face value ..or better!
Probably the smartest non numismatic choice! This is something that does make alot of sense. There are alot of coins you could buy, whether 5 $1,000 coins or 1 $5,000 coin... but these notes are really gaining momentum, and with surviving numbers, could very well turn out to be a solid play. I like the idea.
What a good question to think about. I would try to follow my grandpappys advice and not have the money "burn a hole in my pocket". Maybe I would get the keys for my Mercs and Indian Head cents? If the price was right and the coin looked good to me.
There are some great idea's here. I have about 10 more months to think it over and do some basic research before I get back.
I have decided to follow Krispy's advice kind of... Me and my wife will be attending the ANA summer seminar! We are both taking the same courses. The plan is to take The business of being a coin dealer June 26-30 with Advanced Numismatic Negotiating mini-seminar June 25-27. The following week we will take Introduction to grading United States Coins July 3-7 (for her) and Coin Shop Basics Mini-seminar July 3-4 (also for her). What ever I have left after travel, tuition, hotel and food will be spent at the colorado springs coin show! I plan to write a review of the seminar, classes and the coin show. I will post pictures as well. Thanks guys!
Just a thought - High Grade keys have a history of doing well...just like housing used to. Anything and everything can become overpriced and will eventually return to equilibrium.
Excellent long term choice. Might I also suggest a few of the better US references if that is your field? I am thinking of Breen's Complete US book, as well as a few specialty books in the fields you are most interested in. Very cheap overall, (Breen might run you $150), but just like these classes invaluable long term. Chris
From the way you worded the question I would be looking for a 1815/2 Half Dollar in a PCGS VF35 to EF40 for my set. Is that about right Lance?
I would not choose anything in particular, just keep on doing what you're doing until you find something you really like, or spend it all in small chunks, a little thing here and there. You could also just keep a rainy day fund.
