I just got back from the corner store. I noticed he had four rolls of shield pennies. I traded him 4 rolls of my change for them. I know they were hard to find before. I see rolls selling on eBay for only a few bucks with no takers. Are they worth saving? Are they worth trying to sell?
They are VERY common. I get shield pennys more then I do 2010/2011 nickels/dimes. So IMO, they are just worth dumping back into circulation.
Personally Id just spend them but thats because id rather have coins in my collection with high value. Also it would take a very long time for those to appreciate in value becuase they minted A TON of these.
I go over them with a loupe and keep the most undinged ones I find, even new ones out of rolls can have dings.
You know, I've noticed this too. I thought I was just getting boxes from some weird stash that got wet or something. But to the OP, they're just as "rare" as any new coins. A handfull of change in 1990 had fewer cents from 1989 and 1990, just as a handful today would have fewer cents from 2010 and 2011. But there's no reason to save them really, its just a normal cent.
The point is moot since you already spent the rolls...but I would've cherrypicked the beauties out of the rolls or probably just held onto them to see if someone discovers an error or variety and then search to see if I had any errors/varieties. -LTB
I have only found/received 3 shield pennies. Period. I think they're so pretty.. now, if I came upon a roll or three of them, I may be tempted to spend them, as "commonplace". For now, though, still a cool penny to come upon!
