Are there any normal 1909 vdb pennies with the period between d and b centered exacley inbetween them or is that only the proofs
Here's a non-proof that the period seems pretty well centered. And, there looks like a second period too!
Mine has the periods too, but the middle one is weaker than the other two. Not sure if I can get good pics of it tonight.
You really need to post good images if you wish to get a correct answer on the coin you own. Trying to figure out MS from proof with words is really tough to do.
Sorry to jump in and ask, but it goes along with this post-mine has the periods spaced as above, but a clean, rounded rim. I'm reading the old posts about this but still confused...I'm sure we both could use some more markers to look for. I don't see the die chip by the M on mine, but if I turn it slightly there is a small mark faintly visible and the details in the bow tie, hair, and beard are very nice. Any ideas?
Ok, I stand corrected-the Matte Proof Lincolns diagnostics page ( http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=608346&STARTPAGE=1 ) says they have squared-off edges. Yep, more confused....
What I think is interesting is that davidh's non-proof and robec's proof are from the same reverse die. So is the one shown on the diagnostics page. I'd be interested to see a close up of the VDB on idhair's coin as well.
The 1909 VDB (business strike) had at least two reverse dies that I'm aware of. An ANACS grader told me that the second period can be either smack dab in the middle or closer to the D (centered closer to the left). The 1909 S VDB only comes in the 'smack dab in the middle' variety if I remember correctly. To answer the question in the OP, yes.
Often square rims and edge can be confusing. Here is a 1909 MATTE Proof Lincoln which eventually ended up in a PCGS slab I old thread) Nice rt. angle polished edge. Now here is also a 1909 VDB coin which was questionable as a proof. Here is the edge/rim of that coin. compared to a regular 1909DVB below Edge to edge, questionable coin on top, regular 1909DVB below. questionable on left, 1909DVB on right Of course, I did send this coin in just in case and PCGS said 1909DVB.
