Hi I was wondering your opinion on this coin. Has it been dipped or altered? IS the price 500? Or what dp you think its worth?
What does the seller list the coin as being? An MS-63? The lack of feather detail on the eagles breast and lack of hair detail above the forehead lead me to suspect that the coin may not be uncirculated at all. Now it could simply be a case of the coin being a weak strike but, either way, $500 seems like a lot of money to pay for a 1899 morgan that may not slab as high as the seller is claiming.
Well, Numismedia lists 1899 Morgan dollar @ $219 in AU-55 and $318 in MS-63. So I wouldn't pay more than something in between. IDK, maybe $250 if I really liked the coin and thought it would look great in my collection. But remember, if you submit that coin there's no telling how high it's going to grade and it might not grade at all. That's the chance you take whenever you buy a raw coin, and you should take that into consideration when determining your offering price.
I think it's a counterfeit coin made off of spark erosion dies. But it's tough to tell from a picture.
Real or fake the coin has problems , sure would like to see the 3rd side to see if it was joined together . I'd stay away as Vroomer says .
Too many problems. Would never buy a coin like that for anywhere near book price. Judging by the eagle's chest, either it is a very weak strike, or the coin has been circulated, dipped, and retoned (unaturally?). -Brian
I may be wrong but it looks like some raised marks behind liberty's cap, and a large raised blob in front of her face. The lettering looks mushy, and the devices look like they were hit with sand or etched to give a fake cameo appearance. I'm gonna say cast fake or spark erosion.
I agree totally....strange look to it. I agree...it most certainly (IMO) has been worked on somehow. With that said, IF the coin was gradable, at the stated grade, it isn't worth 5 beans! Granted, it IS a low mintage coin (330,000 minted), but it was saved in great numbers (Uncs could actually outnumber circs, they were saved in that great a number). If you are going to, or thinking of, purchasing an 1899-P Morgan, find a nice one in an NGC or PCGS slab.....for 5 beans you could pick up a nice MS64. I'll add, it isn't a bad coin to have in MS65 or above (not that having a nice MS64 is such a bad thing,,,it's like having an 1880-O in MS63 or higher).... I have a few MS64's...would love to sell 'em and get a nice MS65, possibly someday upgrading to an MS66.
$500 is out of the question. That coin has problems. Marks off Liberty's nose and mouth, much wear to it. I would question it's authenticity as something doesn't look quite right about it. I wouldn't walk away from it, I'd run!
I agree with the others...something is wrong with this coin. The surface looks pores and that is indicative if a counterfeit. If it is genuine, it has wear and has been altered. The coin is worth no where near $500...I would stay away.
