I have a 1969D Washington Quarter. This quarter weights 4.5 grams and is the thickness of a dime. I do not know how to describe the the edge of the coin just look at the picture. Tell me what you think 1969 Washigto Quarter.jpg

PMD, it looks like something with that pattern was smashed against it... I'd keep it though, cool conversation piece.

    Pmd?

If it was PMD why isnt the Liberty and 1969 flatten out if something was smashed against it and how would that account for the thickness and weight? remember there was a 1970 quarter struck on dime stock cut into quarter planclets.

4.5 grams? That sounds a bit light for a quarter.

Ok, I see what you mean so I have another idea.... Do you notice how the pattern is interrupted when it gets around the letters in some parts? I think someone manually carved this out, probably with a sharp object..

I think the ring in the center around the head was made from a quarter rolling machine. That is not what I am wondering about btw.

The ring in the center, is most likely where a dime/penny sat on top for an extended amount of time...

the only problem with that idea is the lines around the edge are raised and match the reeds on the edge they are not carved into the quarter

Can you get a pic of the rim??? This is proving to be very mysterious, indeed.

Perhaps it was in a special press, kinda like as a souvenir piece?? I am really having trouble figuring this out...

The only souvenir press that I am familiar with destory the orginial images of the coin and replace them with the souvenir image, and then will inlongate the coin.

Ok, maybe it is a genuine error, I did'nt read that it is as thick as a dime... I have no earthly idea what it could be though.

Is there a copper core visible on the edge?

me either, I have been collecting off and on for almost 40 years and I have never seen anything like this. I sent it to NGC to be graded and they sent it back labeled damaged to resemble error, however they did not explain to me why or how they reached that decision. They just took my money and body bagged my coin.

yes there is a copper core, I am pretty sure it is dime stock metal that was cut into quarter size planchets, which occurred in 1970. This maybe proves it happened sometime in 1969
