This is one of my newest auction acquisitions : Australia Sovereign 1870. I have found it in the Friedberg rference book but cannot find it my K&M World Gold 6th Edition. I'm looking for the mintage numbers and Friedberg doesn't list those. Can anyone help? http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/1/7/0/0/soveobv.jpg[IMG] [IMG]http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/1/7/0/0/soverev.jpg[IMG]
Thanks Doug !! Rick, Thanks, You should see the other two gold coins I hopefully picked up , I trying to confirm what I won exactly before I post photos. I know I won the Sovereign because the price realized was lower than my bid, the other coins matched my bid so I'm waiting for the invoice to see if I posted my price first.
I like your eye. I think your collection and my collection have a lot in common, if what you post is any indication.
Here's a big sister / little sister take on that particular coin type. My two are a little bit older, hence there's more wrinkles and other signs of age in my coins ;-) Ian
Is the darker color of the second pair of coins because of the photograph, or is there a fair bit of copper in the gold alloy? I must assume this is an incredibly stupid question.
quick dog, I would say it is the mainly the lighting but Ian's coins may be a little darker toned. The first photo is a auction house photo which are generally taken under professional lighting set-ups or scans.
I'd go with `lighting' conditions. I scanned mine on a flatbed scanner. No finesse to it whatsoever. They are fromn the same issue so I suspect that if they were placed side by side in the flesh they would look the same colour. I must confess that my ones don't look quite so yellow as that photo of your one, but I put that down to `lighting' too. Ian
I have got an 1865 Sydney Mint 1/2 Sovereign, which has this very distinctive reverse.I bought it off my boss as scrap gold, but I showed the coin later on to his twin brother, who runs a coin shop in Auckland. He told me that the 1865 is a really scarce date.I was very lucky to have got this coin,as Australia had a shortage of coins in the 1860's,& were forced to utilise traders' tokens, which were mostly 1/2d.'s & 1d.'s,but a couple of traders issued 3d.'s. Hogarth,Erichsen,& Co. of Sydney issued 3d.'s in 1858 & 1860.The coins were struck in very poor quality silver, but they are very scarce. The 1860 'Remembrance' type turns up occasionally.Hogarth,Erichsen,& Co. were the only token issuer to have issued a currency consisting solely of 3d.'s. Aidan.
That's a LOVELY example, oh so close to a choice UNC .. if its not Mint State its the best AU58 I've seen for a while ! Can you detect slight wear ? the image is a bit small ;D but a beautiful coin. edited - offers to buy, sell or trade are not permitted The mintage is 1.22million : 1,220,000 http://www.australianstamp.com/coin-web/aust/sovereig/1870sov1.htm
HALF SOVEREIGN 1865 yeah all old half sovs are good ! 1865 is 500 aussie dollars in FINE, around 2000 for VF
Oh there we go.. lots of replies already what happened there ??? The image is definitely professional, looks like (or as good as) NGC's or any of the other's imaging service when you get a coin slabbed.
RareSov, Thanks for bringing back this post:thumb: . It's been a while since I've looked at this coin and unfortunately it currently resides in a safe deposit box at my bank (the price we must pay for safety ). The photos are those taken by the auction house I bought it from (Jean Elsen). The coin in hand is very pretty and shows some light wear and although not TP graded (yet) probably a AU55. and sorry its not for sale!!
It is very pretty glad someone who appreciates the coin owns it the coin is hard to obtain in such grades and worth PLENTY
