Great RB piece! Fantastic find! Judging by these photos, and great are they not, it looks to maybe be around a 63 or possibly an MS64 in grade. Take a couple inhanced quality, close-up shots so we may be able to further determine the grade and ultimately the value. :)

Congrats on your find! It's neat to see that this coin is generating the same excitement that caused people to line up in droves at the mint to try to acquire one 102 years ago. And in such great condition. I'm sure the previous owner would be glad to see that a true collector found it rather than it joining billions of other cents in circulation.

Very nice! Times three! Now why don't I ever get coins like these at my grocery store? That's unfair! :D

Here are the pics I took with my Nikon. Unfortunately I was working with poor lighting casting shadows when I tried to get closer :( but hopefully you can see the detail in the beard (you can see all the individual whiskers but I don't think the pics show that well), the bowtie, and hair. Its an RB, but I haven't dared to guess the grade lol, Especially after my celebratory glass of wine last night! :b8nce:

Congrats on a great find! I wonder if the family may have rolled other coins.
I'd be running back to the grocery store and buying all the coin rolls in the store, lol.
    Seriously....

I'm not sure it's worth NCS conservation and grading. If you are correct in your grade guess the coin has a market value of roughly $50-80. Better to enjoy it raw, IMO.

I think the verdigris will come off quite nicely. It looks fresh (bright green), which also means it's active...not good. Buy a bottle of Verdi-Care (you can get it here). There is always a chance that the surface underneath has been damaged. Let's hope not. But it certainly will be if you do nothing.

Here are before-and-after pix on two cheap coins I experimented it with. In both cases the verdigris was removed. The second coin shows a bright shiny spot. The verdigris had begun attacking the coin's surface toning. CT member Thad is the expert on this and may have more to add.

I think we all have had that rush from a circ or or roll find and I also get a kick out of seeing others have the same enjoyment. God knows most of our immediate families don't share or understand the same enthusiasmwe have on these finds, so here is a big high five for ya.:thumb:
    That was quite the find

I guess I am just unlucky.lol I have thousands of coins I have hoarded from roll searching and I have never found anything this good.lol I have found some MS coins in rolls, but they were all common dates. I have found some IHC's and silver coins and even some nice teen wheats but that's it.lol Nothing to really write home about. Most of my high value collection I either bought out right (I did get some really good deals) or they were given to me by family members. Oh well, I will still keep on looking and roll searching. I will get lucky one day.lol

My husband got right on it this morning and bought the last of the rolls wrapped like that one for my anniversary gift, but the only thing I have found so far (haven't looked for DDs, RPMs, etc. yet) was a 1942 D. There were several AU 99 coins in one roll, but no WAMs :( I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed though, and I'm still wound up about my 09 :D

All in all, a great find. Sounds like you had it covered. I had just thought that if somebody wrapped coins with the '09 VDB in it, there might be a good chance that somebody grabbed a handful of old coins and maybe didn't think to check them out, and may even contain some silver too. Congrats

I really want to congratulate you on this great find. It takes more than luck sometimes to make a good find.
Give your husband a kiss for thinking of you and presenting you with something that could have passed you by, as in a blink of an eye. Good for him and good for you.

Awesome fine, andyluw12! That’s one good looking coin. Amazing (and scary) to think that it almost made its way back into circulation.

That's a great find - whether an S or not.

I'd feel better about finding a coin I cared a lot about than going out and buying one that everyone is lusting after.

    Congrats!!!

AWESOME FIND!! Not particularly valuable, but it's extremely rare to find an 09 in circulated rolls yet alone a VDB....and...in that grade.

I would not send it to NCS or have it slabbed. It's not of a high enough grade/value to justify the expense. The speck of verdigris on the reverse looks fresh and light, it could easily be conserved. I don't believe the underlying surface will be damaged or pitted based on what I can see in the picture.

It's a good find but I wouldn't say it's amazing. There's always been sellers on ebay claiming to have "original bank wrapped rolls", that will stick a nice VDB visible at the end of the roll to scam people. People see the VDB and think there's a "chance" that it could be an S-VDB so they occasionally bid the rolls up to hundreds of dollars. The 'tricky' seller makes a huge profit and the unlucky buyer loses out. Was it at the end of the roll? Sometimes they'll load a roll and let bidders know that they'll get at least one vdb or similar. I saw one guy making thousands doing this over a couple of months.

I will say you had good fortune off of someone else's mistake/loss letting it go. I don't think it was sitting in a roll untouched for 90 years. It isn't that amazing to me when there's likely hundreds if not thousands of these purposely loaded, modern day, dealer wrapped rolls floating around.
