72 Ike error variety 3?

I recently dusted off my collection of Ikes and I took another look at some of my 72's after seeing some info on another thread. Thanks to some great collectors for providing me with more info on the 72 varities! These three coins would fall under the category 3 varieties, but my question is-are these differences (and seemingly "extra" islands) from die detioration, hub doubling, or what (read:help please! )? The raised outlines on the west coastline are extremely high and deeply carved in, as is Florida. The differences in location of the islands, coast outlines, and raised areas vary greatly. The coloring on these coins is actually a nice bright silver, so I apologize for the color but it was my first time using my new camera to photograph coins this closely and I was in a hurry to get them posted. I have nice pics of the entire reverse (obverse also) for each one too. I'm also interested in any info on varieties for the 71, 71D, 74D, 72D, 76's, 76D, 78, and 78D. I know about the silver varieties and peg legs, but that is about the extent of what I have researched as my Ikes had been in storage for so long that I didn't think I had them anymore. Imagine my surprise and joy when we found my 36 Ikes this Sunday :D !! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You could ask a moderator as they have that ability.

As for your Type 3 72's, all are just different variations in strikeing pressure and die wear. I see nothing that would lead me to believe otherwise.

Keep looking though as the one thing I've learned over the years of looking at IKE's is that if you "look" for what you "expect" to find, you'll never see what is glaringly obvious. Some very rare IKE's have been found using this technique.

The Error Coins Forum may not be the best place for your thread. You are talking about a variety, not an error.

Thank you for taking a look for me. I agree that that's the explanation for the differences but I'm not very confident in my ability to search our attribute these yet. I am new to the Ikes and still learning the fields, devices, etc so I really appreciate the advice. I can look at a Lincoln spot the varieties or errors easily, but I've had a lot of time getting to know what's "normal" for details or damage. With 36 Ikes to search, I guess I will have some time to acquainted with him lol. Does the 78 have a similar variety or is it common for the islands to be to the west on that year? Both my 78 and 78D have the islands in the same location, but they are cleaner strikes.

Thanks, because I felt a little foolish (lol) about not putting this thread there but that's a good point. Being new here, I'm still navigating my way around and it can get a little overwhelming being a newbie on the site. I will keep that in mind for my next post.

The Island configuration has not had any changes since 1973 which means that 1973 through 1978 will all be the same except for normal tolerance items such as die age, strike pressure, and grease filling.

I only have a few non-72 or bicentennials for reference so when I saw the islands to the west on the 78 as in the variety 3 for the 72 I got a little confused. Are there any sites out there for researching and attributing Ikes other than the 72?

You can try the IKE Group at www.ikegroup.org

LOL I read your mind-I've spent all evening there already! I'm addicted to Ikes as badly as I am Lincolns (maybe more so?) and I have put the rest of my cherrypicking on hold for the moment-although I will still get as many coins as I can in the meanwhile lol! My coins were given to me about fifteen years ago by a friend of mine used to give them as tips at the bowling alley I used to work at, and at one time I had way more than the 36 I currently have. If only I could turn back time... I think I may still have a proof set tucked away that he gave me for my birthday. For now I'm going to concentrate on getting to know them better. Thank you for the inspiration! I've researched old posts on Ikes and one of yours is what led me to the Ike group. I will keep you informed on what I find.

I'm happy to report that in addition to my above 72's, I have found a really nice 71D Talon Head and a great 72D Eye Clash that I just finished photographing! :D I have another more minor eye clash and a good single volunteer as well, but I am still researching varieties and want to be thorough. Thank you 19Lyds for sending me in the right direction!

    You are quite welcome.

The MOST fascinating aspect with regard to the Eisenhower dollar is the fact that folks have just flat out ignored it for so many years. That, in and of itself, is reason enough to examine and study the coin.

Very true, heck I ignored my own for over a decade lol! Now I've found the jaw line clash in varying grades on several coins, including the 71D. I can't get over how many varieties there are I never had heard of before going to the Ike Group. Lol should I hold you responsible for my new obsession? I haven't touched a penny in days! ;D

I thought I'd add some pics of the varieties found in my collection. All of these except for the clash on the eye are from one 71D. The eye is from one of my 72 (I think one of the third varieties). Sorry for the color, but the details show up better.

I think it's pretty neat that the planet earth is on a coin. That's why I picked this for my avatar.
