I had the sense to look at the edge of this coin. I honestly dont see any silver color to the edge of this coin. I see sparkles of like silver here and there. I know its not actually silver but thats the color that should be there and it isn't. So my next logical question is. Is this a error and if it is, What is it?

    -edit-

*grumble* well according to google that linked me to a older post. I happened across a thread stating this is most likely a recovered coin from the ground. The only issue i have with that is my coin here looks almost pristine except for the coloring. That being said for all i know it could of just been surrounded by dirt and found later in a none damaging way.

That said Im going to guess im going to hear "post mint damage" a lot with this coin.

I am not sure what your point is. This is a clad coin. It is composed of a copper core and two cupro-nickel (75% copper & 25% nickel) layers.

It looks like clad coins I pull from the ground when metal detecting. Cupro-nickel discolors like that in the ground. Spend it and move on.

I agree I had one a few days ago that looked just like it that came from out of the ground, and I, like you posted it just to be sure. Never hurts to ask. Keep looking and you may find something. GL.

It just looks old and dirty. Ive seen similar dollar coins that are black. those are sintered, or not annealed properly.

Used and abused. A 30 y.o. coin still usable and identifiable. How many $1 bills would have been needed to see the amount of transactions that has seen? Yet, we can't/won't accept a dollar coin.
