I have been collecting for sometime now and today I think I made a great purchase, please advise. I went to the coin shop today and purchased a large set of proof coins, not in the hard case but in the single cardboard holders the set consists of coins from 1964 on up pennies , nickels, dimes quarters ,halves, dollars.I went through each coin and the redbook price and the total was $2,177.00 for the entire lot, I paid $1,100.00 for the whole lot. Did I really make a good purchase?
A little history: I have been dealing with this dealer for a long time and he has been fair everytime. Last week he sold me some gold pesos for 75.00 each (12 to be exact) he wanted 80.00 which was fair but you know us we have to try to get a better price, after I got home I thought I beat the guy up too much as he has always been super fair with me. I went back yesterday and told him I felt bad as he has always been fair with me and gave him $65.00 to make it the $80.00 he was originally asking. Today I go in and he told me he had this lot of proof coins he purchased and said it would take him forever to sell them singley to get his money back and he wanted to purchase more silver and gold coins with the money and he would like me to buy them, we went back and forth and decided on $1,100.00 , thats how the deal went down. He has been in business for a very long time.

Wow! The dealer got the price he wanted for the dos pesos gold coins, giving him money ($65) because you feel bad does not work in my world, he got what he wanted by making the sale iin the first place.

Personally any deal I ever hear about re: proof sets is usually a dumping of coins session. Can you tell me how you benefited from buying the proof sets since there are many proof sets with no silver at all?

Proof sets look nice but if there isn't any silver in them then there's no reason to buy them, JMHO. I hope you learned a lesson because that's an expensive lesson!! live and learn is what I always say.

Some people just like to collect proof sets. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I agree GJ, if you like proof sets buy all you want. It is your collection you can do as you please. Don't ever let someone tell you what you should collect. As for the value, you need to be very careful when using redbook for values. They are almost ALWAYS out of line on the high side. I don't know how you actually made out with your purchase cost wise. BUT, as I said, if you like them it doesn't really matter as long as your happy with the coins.

So congrats on your find! :thumb:

    First time

This is the first time I strayed from silver or gold, i have a full set of peace dollars, four sets of merc dimes everything except the 16d, full set of proof american eagles, almost full set of BU eagles, about 80% full morgan, 2 full sets of washington silver quarters, almost 2 more full sets of peace dollars( need just the easy ones). I just wanted to try some proof coins and this was a bunch all at one time. I guess I just should have bought a nice 16d. My wife like the proofs so I guess I didn't do to bad.

I collect clad proofs with my sets as well, I don't see anything at all wrong with collecting coin series that have silver AND clad components. ????

Welcome to the forum Dave. If you're happy with your purchase then that's really all that counts. :thumb:

If you are happy with the price and are collecting them, certainly other opinions aren't really necessary. I will say this much though, I have never made a purchase in my life where there wasn't someone who tried to tell me they could get a better deal, be it a coin, car, house, suit or loaf of bread.

Personally, I am building a complete year/mint set of Dimes including the clad proofs that I purchased individually. Hey, it's MY collection and I will collect what I want and pay how much I feel is a good deal. But that's MY attitude. lol

    Good luck on yours.

You can get proof set runs from 1959-2009 for around $750 in the OGP, and with the SMS 65-67 sets included.

You paid $1100 for all those without the OGP.

Welcome to cointalk Waterwaydave. You sound like a nice guy who has code of honesty. I admire that a lot. It looks like you have a formidable collection and adding those sets you described makes it just more so. When you get the time and find the right thread please post some of you favorites. You'll find this place full of people with vast numismatic knowledge.
    And it's fun too.
To answer your thread I'd say you did okay. And if you find any problems with the coins I'm sure your long time dealer will accommodate you in some sort of replacement.
