I saw a 1871 shallow "N" indian head cent in a coin shop today. It was labeled "Bold N", but I could clearly tell it was shallow. It was probably in G4 condition and had a labeled price of $70. does anyone know just how rare this coin is? I looked at all of the 1871s on ebay tonight just to see if I could find one. I did not see a single one. I want to go back and take another look (and possibly buy), but I don't want to pay too much for it. Any idea on what these may be worth? It was a problem free coin, just worn down.
I think I am going to get it tomorrow. Its the only one I have ever seen in in person and its mislabeled. Hopefully the dealer wont realize his error between now and tomorrow.
Here is infor from Rick Snow's web site on pricing circulated IHC VF20 VF30 XF40 XF45 AU50 AU55 AU58 Bold N 400 450 500 550 675 715 750 Shallow N 650 700 850 1000 1350 1700 2500
Here are some pics of the coin. Just picked it up for $45. its definitely worn down a bit, but it is clearly a shallow N. The serifs in the "E's" are correct.
