Howdy--I'm buying maybe $50 face of junk silver from a corner store owner who said he found it in his change over the years. Now, that's not a hard story to believe, but I don't want to get fleeced. I think I could spot a bad fake, but is the risk high enough that I should be bringing a gram scale with me and really brushing up on my skills? I'm buying kennedy halves, dimes, a few war nickels, and maybe 3 rolls of quarters. Any advice much appreciated!
I very much doubt you have much to worry about. I would just go over them to make sure they are all what they are supposed to be, as I have seen many people lump regular 1942 nickels in with war nickels, late 60's quarters in with 40% halves and the like. SHort of that I think you are good and shouldn't have to weigh them if you eyeball them.
ring test them if you are worried (drop them on table & make sure they don't sound clad). I wouldn't be.
At the risk of offending you, check the dates on the kennedy halfs as 1964 kennedy halfs are 90% silver while 1965-1969 are only %40 silver. Like I said no offense if you knew this just better safe then sorry.
