Those of you who collect Morgans; do you pick up ones that are less than MS?? Like Fine to Extra Fine and such???

I've been getting most of mine that are Slabed by PCGS in MS-63 or above, but I've seen alot in lesser grades that I kinda want.... But I can't make up my mind....

    Don't get me wrong, I don't want a planchette... :)

But, Do I only buy 63+ or get whatever as long as I can still read the date, Liberty on her headgear and see some of the lines in the har and ears... :headbang: Inner Conflict...

I also thought about picking up any to get as many years and mint marks as I can, then slowly replacing them with the best I can, thus building another set.... You can never have to many coins I don't think...

I've been getting MS when I can, but my budget won't allow MS on every thing. I have picked up a few ef-au coins with good eye appeal. I'm getting down to the more expensive dates now so I will have to settle for a little more wear on my coins, the rarer CC coins in particular.;)

Well that was kind of obvious, but I was just wonder where you all stood and what you thought on it...

Well that is where I stand.....you see I don't think one person can tell someone else how to collect.
That is why I posted what I did.
For myself....I don't collect Morgan Dollars.

Sure I'll buy and collect Morgans less than MS condition. They look great from MS all the way down to poor.

Even better is when I picked up 5 for $9 each last year. Couple rim dings and in VF/XF condition, still looking good!

Thats kind of what I was thinking, but I just wanted to see what others thought....

I guess I'm the curious type and wondered what others thought... Wait, I think I just said that... :)

I wasn't staking the Farm on it...

I was just curious about how others collect... Maybe I should have phrased it differently or not have posted at all...

Since you don't collect Morgans, Pick a coin you collect.... Whatever the coin, series, do you pick up the less that steller specimens or wait for something better???

Well Smullen, here's what I do. I like to buy the best I can afford, but still be able to get a coin or two every once in a while...meaning...
I save my money until I can get a nice coin, but I don't save so long that I'll only be able to buy one coin per year. For instance, I might save up my money long enough to buy an MS61 $10 Liberty Eagle. But I don't save up long enough to buy an MS64 because that would just be too long for me in between big coin purchases. I like to buy nice coins, but still have fun and be able to buy something every once in a while. It also depends on how I'm interested in the particular coin or series that I'm buying. Sometimes I just want a coin to have an example of one...for instance I recently purchased a Classic Head Large Cent and a 3 Cent Nickel, both of which I wanted just to have an example of them, so I bought them in a little bit lower grades and didn't break the bank.

Oh no.....we love to have questions posted here....

If I'm working on a matched set then I wait till I find it....like my set of PF66 Franklin Halves....they MUST be PF66 and must have good eye appeal to me at least.
On a set like Wheat Cents.....when I was working on that any grade worked....my 1914-D is only a G4 whereas my S VDB is a VF20....

As an error Morgan specialist, the conditional rarity of the error matters far more to me than the strict grade of the coin. Maybe 1/3 of the coins I buy are uncirculated, and very few are slabbed. Of course, that only answers the original question in a sidelong fashion, so my honest answer is, "Yes, I buy Morgans which are below MS," just because they're nice coins. I'm slowly building an XF-AU collection of Large Cents, partly due to price and partly because, like Morgans, they age well.

Ditto with Barber Quarters, and maybe Halves in a couple years when the current feeding frenzy dies down.

Morgans generally look great in VF-XF grades, so I personally have no prejudice against buying the circulated coins. If you put a collection of circulated Morgans into a Dansco album, they look impressive. The thing to keep in mind is not to overpay because most of the coins are pretty common in circulated grades. The downside is that this sort of collection will not appreciate in value much more than the silver bullion content. The upside is that it's a great looking coin, maybe the most historic and best looking of all American coins, and is a very affordable way to collect large 100+ year old coins.

I buy MS for the investment value. As far as I am concerned, Morgans actually look better when they have a little wear and develop that wonderful nice "natural" silver/gray tone. I grab every VF-EF I find at a good price.

    Hi smullen,,,
me i'm from Paris in France and here we do not have the possibility to choice the morgan you expect to have because they do not know what is a Morgan!!!!!
so in my part, when i buy a morgan ( from US sellers ), the fist thing is to have fun to buy it, so to respond to your question, i have a lot of AU- and EF- but also a lot of MS-, i mean that like you said, you can find some beautiful morgan in AU- but also in MS.
today, i bought 14 certified coins from ANACS and NGC, and 6 of them are solid AU-55/58!!!!
so it's up to you , is it your preference, your choice.
i have a friend who collect only AU-58 and he is happy. me i try to collect the most VAM- i can expect to buy but like most of the people, my bank do not want my account explose so....patience, patience...hahahahaha

If the price is right, yes. I just won a Morgan for $4.99 from an Ebay seller. I was buying a Barber Half for the Dansco and perused the other items for sale to see what I could get with the combined shipping break. The five dollar Morgan jumped out at me as a nice purchase for the silver value if nothing else.

 waouhhhhhhh!!!!!! a really good deal!!!!!!

last day, i bought on ebay a NGC morgan and the seller said to me that he gave me a extra morgan in the package because i was his fist french customer, so maybe a EF/AU morgan!!!!!
but for me it's very cool because it's another morgan in my collection even if the grade is low !!!! since i have one more morgan!!!!!!
ps: this seller will tay for a long period in my list of favorite seller:goof:

What you buy always depends on what your goals are. If I get serious into morgans and walking liberty halves, I'd start out accumulating each year, then each mintmark for each year adn takiong whatever excess I may have and sellign the to invest in higher grades. That is how I am slowign funding the purchase of the earlier 50's proof sets, from duplicates and ones that arent as great in appearance.

Well I had rather have one 1889 CC in VF than two 1889 philly's in MS 65.

For my complete set, I try to go AU to MS64 (though I'll never see this in the key dates).
For my date set, I'm trying to stay all MS63 or better.
For my Morgan varieties, I take circulated and uncirculated. I try to avoid heavy hits, rim dings, and severe cleaning.
90% of my Morgans are circulated... VF-EF.
I bought ten Morgans today. They were $10 each. All in the F-AU range. I picked out some nice VAMs from a very large pile.
