Hey everyone, I recently became interested in coins after going through a coin collection for a family member. I've obtained a good deal of information by browsing the Internet, but I'm basically still a newbie when it comes to the world of coins.

Anyway, I would like to get some opinions on how much people think this Morgan dollar is worth. It's not mine and all I have are these pictures. Also, I noticed that there is a small mark on both sides of the coin in the same place (on 2nd 8 in 1884 & on the O in DOLLAR). Would that affect the value significantly? Thanks in advance for opinions.

If the coin is genuine it's worth about $100.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

The marks in the "8" and the "O" aren't in the same position since the reverse is actually upside down (coin turn) in relation to the obverse. The mark in the "8" is at about 5:45 and the mark on the "O" is at about 11:45. It may be that the coin was mounted in some kind of jewelry, like a necklace. You can also see that there appear to be identical diagonal marks in the same position in relation to the "8" & "O" on, both, the obverse and reverse rims. This may also suggest that it was in some kind of mount. Are these scans or photos? I ask because there appears to be no luster at all which suggests that it has been cleaned.

If this is correct, it would probably receive a "Details" grade and worth not too much more than melt value.
