I was just wondering, what any of you collector's would pay for a twenty cent piece in G-4 condition on E-bay? I know alot of you said don't go by the red or blue book amount's. I've been collecting coins for some years now, and i never bothered to much with the 20 cent piece. But i'm thinking about getting one. Going by the blue book a G-4 is $52 and the red book list for $110. My coin dealer never go's by the book's either, but he give's me a break now and than. One time he gave me a pretty good break on a 1932d and a 1932s in VG-8 for $175 a piece, i thought that was a good deal back than. Can anyone give me an idea what you would be willing to pay for the twenty cent piece in G-4 condition. Just curious, and looking for advice.. Thank you very much..
When I go looking for a coin, I figure out what a fair price is and base my hunt off of that. As an example if the red book says $110 that may be close to what a local shop may retail the coin at so I would hope to find one in the $90-$95 range. Now having said that the popularity of the coin can dictate price more than the red book, so the $110 may be a good price. What I do is set myself a limit and hold to it. Patience will pay off. Be patient!
I don't know what they go for now but I remember back when I put my set together dealers couldn't give them away for even $25 apiece for any of the 1875 coins. I paid $100 for my VF 1876.
Since you asked what we would do I will answer this way. Fisrt I would go to eBay and look at what they were selling for. Just did a quick look see and gues what I think on the first page I see a fake and a bunch of cleaned junk in low grade. OK I do not want a fake type coin so I refine my search to top tier graded coins. So I put PCGS in the search box. And My search that was at 369 goes down to 38 and I also have the PCGS price guide to give me a idea of retail prices as a guide of my max bids. While even a couple of this list are still problem coins they are in Geninue holders I have at least got myself looking at coins that I will be more likely to get my money back out of than when I started. BTW you could also refine the search with NGC or ANNACS ( I prefer the PCGS holder and grading myself, all my graded coins are by them) if you wanted to but what I am saying is if your putting your money into a highly collectable coins get ones that will return your purchase down the road. Yes you might spend a little more this way but buying several cleaned or counterfiet coins now and finding out later will cost more in the long run. Edit to add that as type in G4 the price giude says $125.00 for a PCGS coin but myself I would be looking for a Fine or so with more detail in the $200 range. BTW I kind of like the looks of this one lets see what it goes for I will not be bidding and I do not know the seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/1875-S-TWENTY-C...33?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item33691ae949
Thank you Lindedad, i looked at the one you liked, this is were i get confused, the coin is graded VF-30, but i can't see Liberty on the shield at all, how can such a good grading service call that an VF-30? Because if it is that grade, i am going to have to go thru all my coins, and start all over again, and do some up-grading of my own. I wish i was a pro at grading coins, it is so much money to grade them. I have hundred's i would like to get certified.
I have wondered on the grading of these also. The word liberty on the shield is a key grading point on most of the Seated coinage but I have seen XF examples of the 20¢ that seem very weak or not even visible. Not sure but maybe it was just not ever as bold on this coin as many of the others. I do know that in many series the S mint coins have always seemed to have weaker strikes.
And another thing... Why is it so hard to find any Barber's 10 cent 25, 50 etc.. with liberty on the head, it seams they ware down very fast, like the buffolo nickle's. i have some really good one's, like the 1915 half in VF condition and the 1897o in fine con. and some other one's with liberty showing. but i have at least 500 dimes, Quarters, halve's without liberty at all. It's strange, because alot of my Liberty seated coins are in better condition than the younger Barber's.. Very odd!!!
Something you have to remember about grading the 20 cent piece. Unlike all the other Seated Liberty coins the word LIBERTY on the shield is in raised relief of the 20 cent. On all the others it is sunk INTO the coin. For that reason LIBERTY is about the highest point on the coin and the part that wears away the fastest. To wear away the LIBERTY on the other coins you have to wear away the banner. A coin in Fine on say a seated quarter will still show the entire word, but a twenty cent piece in Fine will have the word completely gone. I think I still see traces of the L and TY so I would think this coin would make at least VF 20 and quite possibly 30.
Thank's for that info... Another Question.. sorry, i have several coin site's i use, i want to know if any of you all think i made a good deal. And of course i can't upload photo's yet, sorry. i just bought a 1908s indian head cent, don't forget i can't alway's buy top notched coin's. the cent is great looking for a G-4, i think you all would agree, i paid $80.00 for it, i think that was a good deal!! DO YOU ALL?
