The purpose of this thread is to facilitate discussions regarding grading of Franklin Halves. I know what I feel I've learned, I did my best when compiling my set, and remember moderate difficulty distinguishing between typical die wear/characteristics, distinguishing high end AU from low end MS and other various difficulties. So, I took a couple hours (maybe more) and photographed my collection, complete without upgrades and some duplicates from my childhood. I thought I would post a link to the album here, and we can have some fun discussing grades of the various coins. I know my grades, I know the dealer's grades, but I thought this would serve as a nice learning experience for those thinking of starting a Franklin set, to those wishing to distinguish between various MS grades. So, let's start with a little game to foster conversation, for which there is no prize but having satisfaction that you grade like me. For each coin, provide a numeric grade. For each coin that you grade correctly (based on my subjective measurement) you'll get 1 point. 2 points will be rewarded for identifying any varieties, abnormal die/strike characteristics, lowest graded coin, and highest graded coin. 3 points will be rewarded for spotting the cleaned coin (yes, there is at least one). Then, I'll post my and the dealer grades and maybe we can discuss why some people chose what they did after a couple days to allow people to particpate. Ok, enough chatter! Here's the link: http://s765.photobucket.com/albums/xx292/dimeguy_2010/Franklin Halves/ And because I know I'll be asked, I did attempt a new lighting system for all the coins. I've heard people exclaim over the benefits of natural light, so all were photographed outside on a nice sunny day. Yes, it does capture tone and luster quite well, but some of the pics I'm not sure are representative of the actual coin. So, if you wish to have a different picture to determine a grade...just let me know. Have fun and let the grading debate begin!
First page, first row, first coin, MS-64. How'd I do? PS: Looks as though you've got a very nice collection there, BTW. Didn't have the time to look at all of it, but much of it. :thumb:
lol...yeah, I guess that's a give a way. I photographed the same coin in sunlight and it was just too blanched and white so I decided to add an old picture. By the way, I find the slide show feature to be really cool.
Hmmm...no takers/guessers yet? Perhaps my pics or too darn poor or it takes to much time...still I would have thought someone would have made a shot at some grades, but maybe no.
